One way to get good locks ususally for free is to just ask a locksmith.
When I did that i got about 30 kw10, sc1, and american lock keys plus an entire box full of cylinders with a nifty little hotel function cyl.

As a friend told me who has picked this lock before, and who has taken one apart, he said that the second pin in was a spool pin.

they are just as they sound. If you look at a serrated pin, it has little grooves in it designed for it to false set. Spool pins have a deep groove, and resemble a spool (who would have figured). IMHO, spools are harder then serrated pins, but both can be really nasty if they are placed well in the lock.

As for what to buy, i would suggest a repinning kit. repinning a old lock will make a new challenge for you, and will help you get good enough to tackle harder challenges.

Have fun

I have some spools that I've described as "serrated spools." On each "lip" of the spool, there is one serration. I guess it's intent is that once you realize you have spools, you press till the plug stops turning the opposite way and it clicks... but you have still hit a false set...

It's pretty obvious though because, ideally, you would just be setting the spools last. After you set a spool, you should get significant plug rotation to bind the next one. You don't have much plug rotation for that little false positive.

It's smart in theory, but they don't feel much different in practise than normal spools.
