If I was able to get a gouging machine near the safe I believe this would be the best way to gain entry without destroying the contents. It suprisingly produces little heat and can get through lots of metal really fast. The fact the safe desperses the heat energy almost makes this method even better.[/quote]

But at the speed and heat that Thermite burns I don't know if the copper will dissipate it fast enough...
Lastly...
There are very few problems that cannot be solved with the application of high explosives.
I would think linear shaped charges should work no?
Also who here saw the episode of braniacs where they opened the safe with this....

it will only work on burglers of known lividity though. sort of like a shotgun and a door.

zeke79 wrote:Yes it basically reaches a higher temp then some of the barrier metals out there and burns through. I have not looked into the specs of this safe to see what it is rated at.
Personally, I wonder if thermite would burn through a 1.25"-1.5" thick copper barrier plate. Copper plates are used in some safes to disperse heat and defeat standard oxy acetylene and various other torch attacks.
Looking at it from a physics point of view, if you preheat the target area first (real hot, and about 12" in diameter), you will greatly slow down the thermal transfer rate. This should increase the efficency of either a torch or drill attack.
But what do I know? Heh.

Copper is good at transferring heat. This is a fact.
You could take some of your time away from this board to test something since you have so many ideas.
But what do I know eh?

I'm sorry that you percieve me as a jerk. Thats not my intention.
I'm a scientifically oriented person. Have been my entire life. I'm only presenting that point of view, just as you present yours as a locksmith. We each have our strengths.

My apologies, it has been a rough day today.
I was merely stating why copper plates have been used in higher security safes.
