Schlage has plug kits that will allow you to key a Schlage lock to KW1 and WR5 (Weiser). The kits include about 6 different plugs in 5 pin and 6 pin configurations, and for different models of Schlage locks (ie: F series Orbit and Bell knobs, which have different length plugs, and B series locks) and in Silver and Brass finishes. Also includes the different bottom pins for a factory cut Kwickset or Weiser key.
I'll take a pic of the kits and post up soon.

With these plug kits, is spacing kept the same? What about pinning spec?

The spacing must be kept at Schlage specs, as the plugs need to line up with the top pin bores. I think there must be a compensation in the front area of the plug where the shoulder stops to align the spacings correctly. The pins I'm not sure of, as I usually just use my Lab kit when pinning up, but if your using a factory cut key, you could read the numbers and use the pins in the coversion kit.

You can add the WR3 keyway. I just cut a key on a KW1 blank and unlocked a door.

I figured that about the spacing, lest the kit includes a whole new lock. :? What I don't get is how a factory cut key (cut to both pin and spacing spec) would fit such a lock.

as jimb stated, adn this shocked me, but i was at target the other day just browsing their locks, and discovered that low and behold, they had some yale deadbolts that used they KW1 keyway. i was shocked, as most yale locks use their own Y series keyways.

got home, opened it up (it was a measly $6 usd for a single deadbolt) and picked it, took like a whole 30 seconds, but hey, $6 aint bad no matter how ya slice it. AND after a few pickings, i took that bad boy apart, and found 5 normal key pins (big surprise) and 4 normal drivers (again, big whoop) and then, to my amazement, a mushroom pin! yes a mushroom! ive played with spools, and even a serrated or two, but never a mushroom. and so i am really surprised that a $6 lock had even one mushroom. it was pretty cool.

Just about every residential grade lock you can buy from discount stores, sparing the Schlage which almost always takes a SC1.

This works because the kwikset flats at the root depth are wide enough to work on schlage spacing and still be a factory spec kwikset key, however you would need to use aftermarket pins with the the schlage replacement plug and not the typical flatter bottomed kwiset OEM pins.

Here are the spaces for
Schlage:
.231 .387 .543 .700 .856 1.012

Kwiset:
.247 .397 .547 .697 .847 .997

Spacing differences

.016 .010 .004 .003 .009 .015

These should work with the wide flats found on kwikset keys especially if the keys are cut using the "laser" method which leaves no "peaks" between spaces. I however have never seen or used one of these sets, but can see the possibility for it to work.
