true enough it may be unlikely he set the combination by mistake on a lock very similar. but he may just have forgotten the combination. and no offense but if i was trying to steal a bike it wouldn't be that one. chipped paint and easy to identify. and he is in a house with it. plus you could cut that off with a decent set of bolt cutters. but from the picture it looks like it would be near impossible to see or feel the cams in that lock so im guessing that manipulating the lock is the only way to open it.

All the best, wish you luck with the lock.

I'm still a bit in the dark about how exactly i changed the combo - i'm positive I did though, since my old combo doesn't work, and i'd been using that lock for a few months prior.

My usual habit, when unlocking my bike from a stand, is to twist the dials to the correct combination, open the lock, re-wrap it around my frame, close the lock, and then twist the dials to a new sequence (so that it doesn't fall off when i'm biking).

But I don't see how that could have reprogrammed it:

my understanding of the c-clip is this:

1: flip c-clip to reprogram
2: reprogram sequence
3: REFLIP c-clip back

Now I can see how i may have inadvertantly done step 1, but i'd've needed to reprogram the sequence before closing the lock, and I never do that.

Maybe the lock is just malfunctioned somehow, and it isn't actually reprogrammed. I'll find out if I ever have to resort to a brute force method.

I'd rather not cut through this lock - I have a pretty strong wire cutter I could try, but I'd rather keep this lock as it's better than the one i'm using now.

I'll try the yanking and give method - i did try that before posting without any luck, but'll give it another shot, and let you know how it goes.

heh no offense taken - this bike is my baby and i'm glad it's an old and rusty looking bike, since nobody's ever tried to steal it, as far as i know.

gets me everywhere though - depending on where i go to grad school next fall i may be doing over 200km a week on it.
