It sounds like to me the plug is turning too far. So the sheer pin will not go up.

Good morning guys.

Hey.. I have had this happen to me to ...but i found the answer to it.. you know how you said if you look at the top of the lock and the #3 pin is off set just a little... depending what way its off set is the reason that this is happening.. if its off set to the right....it will be the first pin to bind if your pulling tension to the left...and therefore if its off set to the left it will be the first pin to bind if pulling tention to the right...

try setting that #3 pin first, Man.... I hope i am explaning this well enough......

locks flaw is the fact that the pins shafts are not drill exactly in a line...

and bacuse of this flaw theres always a binding pin and makes lock picking very possable..

thats #3 pin of yours is offset... so maybe you are setting another one that is not so off set..therefore making it near impossable to det the last on thats to far off set.. make sense?

Ya, I think it's a spool. More practice I guess.

hey ben,
try grinding or cutting the tip of your wrench so that it fits right where your pins are but doesnt touch the first pin then apply tension in the center of the plug not at the bottom.......
dont cut your only wrench but if you have a few try it I do this for all kik/lever/db/and mortise-rims most others to some I use different ways but it will reduce your possible friction/binding against the housing...just a thought

Ya, I got it figured out, pin #3 and #4 are spools.

I own several of those defiant deadbolts. (they're really cheap) All of them Have 5 pins and a spool for the third. I would recommend taking it apart, and taking out the spool and picking it like that for a while. Also, all my defiants have a weird tendency to like... lock up. It just gets stuck, but if that is your problem you can overcome it by putting in your wrench, and pushing back and forth a little until the cylinder moves more freely.
And, I don't know if this is relevant but, I find the vertical style of tension wrench to work much better in my defiants than the horizontal ones, but I find the horizontal ones to work much better for padlocks. You might try that.

So, would most Kwikset deadbolts not have a spool?

You could try a kwikset. Although in my experience, most of these cheap deadbolts have a spool in em somewhere. I would get one though, because then, even if it does have a spool in it you can take it out and replace it with another pin from your other cylinder, because, and someone correct me if I'm wrong, I'm pretty sure that the pins are interchangeable.

We use lots of new Defiant deadbolts at work. On ours (5 pin), driver pin # 3 is a spool pin.

I bought a Kwikset deadbolt recently and there were no spools in it, it was the cheapest deadbolt I could get from Home Depot, like $12 or so.

My wife got me a Defiant deadbolt for xmas too. I have not opened it up, so I'm not sure if there are spool pins or not. She had a friend mount it to a board and she doesn't want me to remove it until after we visit her family (leaving tomorrow). Maybe once I get back I can confirm it, but next time I work on it I'll see if I feel anything odd about pin #3.

I have opened the Defiant deadbolt a number of times, it's harder than the Kwikset and definately not as loose - it feels like it could use some wd40.

I bought that exact Defiant deadbolt lock a week ago, it was fairly easy to pick using SPP, and easier using raking. Unfortunately I messed up when I tried re-pinning the lock, and I think I’ve ruined it. At the same time I realized that there was 2 spool pins, watch out for the cylinder to turn a tiny bit before it goes. If so, use lighter tension and retry.

I went through these same problems, I know exactly how you feel! Here is what I did. I have some locks that I know I can open, so I start with them first, then I go to the lock I have problems with and I am usually succesful, also don't try to pick on your locks for long periods of time, when you get a little tired or aggravated, its harder to pick a lock open. Take a breather, pick some easier locks then go back to that one.
