thanks for the info. I just have one more question if you don't mind. Southord. refered me to there west coast shop lockpicks.com because I am in Ca. there a little more expensive but that's ok I don't mind spending the money if I get what I pay for. My question is which would be the better set the 32 piece set for 74.95 or the 69 piece set for 139.95? Like I said before I don't mind spending the money if I get what I pay for. Also if you guys really think it is a good idea for me to buy a much smaller and cheaper set then I will I just don't like buying things twice when I could have save some money and got it right the first time. Thanks again

I would get the 32 piece discount set from southord for $40. Only problem with it (i ordered it) is that they aren't stamped "Southord" and some of the picks are *a little* scratched, but definetly nothing that effects picking. If you want to spend all that money though and pick between the two, I would sitll pick the 32 piece. 64 seems like a bit of over kill to me... might as well save that money for other tools from different brand names and such to experiment around with and see which one you like.

so we have a 10% discount at the www.lockpickshop.com thats great to know.first how do we utilize that discount and second of all do we as a whole have enough pull to get them to carry and sell all the other major brande ie peterson, lab .majestic,rytan,ect. ordering off the internet isnt a problem for me its just shipping that kills you.i want 10$ from rytan and 20$ from peterson and 15$ from southord and so on and so forth. eventually your paying as much for shipping as you are for prouduct.why cant we have a site that sells it all? ill pay the extra quarter to avoid the
$6 shipping dng it. anybody with me?

My apologies, it seems I got a little 'click happy,' if you will. Here is the link.

in my first set, I got the SouthOrd 14 piece set because it came with handles, 4 tension wrenches, and one of each important tool: half diamond, ball, rake, snake... And last, you can order with money :D For me thats very important because Im only 14 and can't use my credit card because my mom is an acountant. It sucks to have a mom who watches over everything you buy. All in all, SouthOrd makes good picks.

The only three picks I ever use is a Southord long hook with a modified tip to resemble the peterson gem, the double ended southord half diamond, and the L rake. I can't really imagine needing anything else.

also, I live in europe. Is any of these sets for europe?
C500 is maybe the best choice cause for $20 you get a guide too.
But still give suggestions!!!

Sander: Have a search around the site for jackknife sets. You'll find that few ppl recommend them for a beginner. You're probably best off with a slimline set.

Cheers!

I still like Peterson, blue plastic handle- best pick I've found so far- I'm not a locksmith so I'm having a bit of trouble trying to get the Falles. In my opinion get a cheap Southord Slimline- I cut mine down-they fit nicley in an exacto knife :) If you find that you like the hook, or half diamond, or whatever then order them individually from Petersons if your in the U.S. If you don't like them, try something else-I got a set of navigators that were due 4 days ago  As for tension wrenches I have got to hype the Peterson, make your own with the bend-it tool- for $20 you can make 15 wrenches-you'll find that 1 or 2 of those are worth $20 themselves if ya make them right- replacement steel is dirt cheap too!
* This advice is from very limited experience, Southord is inexpensive and they seem to follow the same specs as other picks. Decide what picks you like most and if you want to go further into the hobby, buy some individually and build up a nice set. Of the over $150 dollars I've spent on picks so far- 90% of the time I use a Peterson hook ($2.90) and a hand made wrench 1/20 of $30- essentialy, for about $4.00 I can pick most common padlocks, Kwiksets, and Schlages (need the Southord Slimline for 1)

P.S. most higher number Southord sets offer picks that are redundant

I think you got it around the wrong way lol.

I would recommend the 5 pc set because it will help your skills alot more then the jackknife set. Until you work at picking and get your skill up. The jackknife wouldnt be the best choice for you and you should go with the 5 pc.

I would say you could probably skip the book. There's plenty of info here. But get yourself the slimlines.
