you can add me to the "because i like toys" list...

why not use a pick gun or an electric pick on a padlock in your hand to which you already have the keys. it's not any sillier than using a manual pick or a rake on that same lock. "how many different ways - and how fast - can i get into my locks?" seems to be in keeping with the ideals of locksport.

It can be bought from either locksmith supply Co. in Australia but they wont sell to the public.

Also like already said don't get one, you wont have any fun with it after 5 minutes and would of wasted $70, there only needed for the pros.

thanks for that. that sucks that locksmith supply co's wont sell to public. i would like to get a pick gun/picks but worry that if i order form overseas aust customs will seize them and i'll lose my money and goods.

Dont suppose anyone knows any locksmiths or supply co's in aust that will sell to public?

you could speak to local locksmith and explain why you want the goods, if he believes you you should be ok, you never know he could be a member here

Sorry - I disagree with you. It's infinitely sillier.

I can teach a two year old to open a padlock with a pick-gun in about ten minutes. A monkey might grasp it faster, I'm uncertain.

Picking locks is about solving puzzles. Pick-guns are about smashing one thing into another thing pseudo-randomly.

He wants to buy a pick gun, so provide some friendly advice, useful comments, or don't post. Having and using a pick-gun is equally useful as a set of lockpicks, bump keys, impressioning keys, try-out keys, comb picks, decoding tools, etc. Just because it doesn't fit into your pretty picture of what locksport is or is not doesn't mean you shouldn't help this guy out.

To OP, from your links it looks like maybe you don't quite understand how a pick gun works?

The first two are manual pick guns, the quality will probably not be *too* different between them. They just slap the pin tumbler pairs and try to separate them at the shear line. The third is electronic, it is inserted and turned on to slap pin tumbler pairs repeatedly and automatically. The trick is to find the right resonating frequendy to make the pairs jump quite a bit, allowing you to separate them in the same way.

The fourth is not really a pick gun but a "bump gun" for dimple locks, a variant of pin-tumbler locks. Look around the site for more information on bumping/key bumping.

The last link is for comb picks, which aren't really "padlock" picks, but a general class of lockpicking (some would argue bypass) tool that tries to raise pin stacks completely above shear line. They are effective against many low-end locks, but not rarely with medium-high security locks.

Don't get me wrong. I totally agree they are equally useful. They're great for breaking into things. As a general rule, I find that any time one can declare a technique as "smashing one thing into another like a caveman", it's great for breaking into things. But very little else.

And going forward, I'd appreciate your not attempting to dictate where and when I post. Thanks!

thanks very much for your straight forward answers. Which of the 2 manual pick guns would you recommend? or would I be better of getting one from another locksmith supply website? I'm trying to decide whether to get a pick gun from Deal Extreme or another site but I'm worried Australian customs will sezie it. If they do seize it do I get charged with an offence or do they just destroy iy?

How about going to www.dealextreme.com and getting any of those items for less than half the price? Do your research, than start asking about buying tools.

Sorry, I don't know the laws for Australia (you can check the Locksmith Business/Got Questions/etc forum for Legal information), but I own the Deal Extreme pick gun and it is fine for what I need it for. You should know the DX pick-gun has a metal clip that will pop off after repeated use, you need to continually make sure it is snug and seated. It is annoying, but not too hard to get used to doing each time you use the pick gun.

If you are planning to use it casually or just "to have" I would recommend the Deal Extreme gun, but if you are going to be using it frequently I would look into the nicer guns; the EAGLE should be fine, I'd imagine.

DX doesn't just sell that cheap silver looking pickgun. They also have the EAGLE, electric and dimple gun you showed for less than half the price.

yeah Ive looked at deal extreme and that is why i was askign which of the 3, the dx one, the eagle one or the electric one was the best to buy as the prices seem very cheap compared to other sites, or to buy on from another site.

ideally as Ive said I would like to get one in Australia if possible, but this is very doubtful as I'm worried Australian customs might seize it, hence why I was also asking if anybody in Australia had bought them from deal extreme and elsewhere and what their experience with customs was like.

i have had some good replies though even though no-one in Australia has said how they fared and I really appreciate the help I've got. i bought a Southord C005 set in 2005 from a memebr here in Australia so was know just looking to get a pick gun as have used manaul picks. Unless I just forget about the pick gun and get a better/larger pick set.

This may be a weird suggestion but why don't you call customs and ask? I did that many times when I was pondering whether or not something was legal in Holland or not. DX normally states on the package that they as a company declare the package does not contain any illegal items. They label lock picks and pick guns as "Hardware Tools" and to Holland it hasn't been any problem as of yet.

Like I said, call customs and ask? Do it from a pay phone if you don't want to "give away your identity" ;)
