Way back many years ago, "bumping" locks was called "rapping" locks. Now rapping is another thing... Essentially, some locks can be picked much easier than they can be bumped, and some locks can't be bumped at all. (warded locks, disc locks, abloy locks, schlage primus and some everest, etc.) As stated earlier, bumping is one tool in many to accomplish the desired result.
Another difference is that a set of picks can open almost anything, but bumping requires a different key for each keyway, and a striking tool. It's picks hands down.
