I'm sorry if this sensitive information violates forum rules. I'm merely trying to help the guy out. Best of luck, OP.

i did not reply because I talked to the RA and had the door opened.
They locked it again over Christmas break, so now I get another chance to pick this thing.
I got it into the situation again where it turned 1/3 of the way and then stopped.
well it actually stopped this time after about 1/6 of a turn, but I was able to get it to move further by pushing in and out on the door and vibrating the tension wrench.

Your explanation sound like a lie.
The lock has "Calculated Values".. values calculated from what?
what is their relevance to the lock?
triggers a solenoid? ok, so you are telling me that there are electronics inside the lock... sure.

I would say the rest of the stuff sounded ok, perhaps there is some pin somewhere that gets disturbed when lockpicking, and that can be forced back into position from some airflow.

from my interpretation of the posts Confederate has tried to tell me a somewhat resonable sounding method, with the intent of wasting my time.
So hey, thanks Confederate!

Hi xilus2

Yes, Confederate was teasing.

The rules of the site won't allow anyone to give you information about picking this lock (because it is 'in use' and does not belong to you).

You say 'they' relocked the door during Christmas break. Does that make you a student in halls (student accommodation)?

Personally I would talk to the building administrators again. It not a good idea to live in a place where any potential emergency exit is permanently sealed. It may be a balcony door and the balcony may be high up, but in the event of a fire it might be the only option for escape.

Of course, the building administrators may have completed a risk assessment and concluded that the benefit of leaving the door unlocked for possible emergency use is outweighed by a greater risk of the occupants falling or jumping from the balcony. Or it may be a temporary measure while the structural safety of the balconies is checked.

I would ask the building administrator why the door is locked and whether they have fully considered the safety implications.

Cheers...

the truth is that all I have to do is walk down the hall 10 feet, and ask the RA to open the door.
nonetheless, it would be more enjoyable to pick the lock, and I would learn something.

No, thats illegal. Go buy a lock from a discount store and pick it in the comfort of your dorm room.

If you want to pick a lock on the balcony, go ask the RA for access, and pick that new lock you just bought.

What if someone sees you picking that lock and calls the police? I'm pretty sure you wouldn't be a student anymore after that..

We say things for your own good. If you don't want to take the advice, don't ask about doing illegal stuffs. Word your questions differently.

I hear you - but one of the reasons the site has a rule about picking locks in use is that (however experienced you are) picking carries the risk that the lock will be damaged so that it cannot be locked or unlocked even with a key. That holds true whether you 'own' the lock or not, but doubly so if you do not own it - if you rent you do not 'own' it - because the owner/landlord would then have the expense of replacing it and the damage might violate your agreement and give cause for eviction.

However, even a 10ft walk might be impossible if a fire barred the way to your main exit door, so my view is still that the balcony door should not be sealed. If the RA is happy to open the door on request then ask if you can have a key (even if you have to pay to have a copy made or as a deposit against losing it).

Meanwhile, buy some cheap locks to practice picking or see if you can get some for free (might even be worth asking the RA - many landlords of multi-occupancy buildings change locks when tenants move out for security reasons so might have old locks from time to time).

Cheers...

There must be a reason that the balcony is locked from constant use (IF- we believe the OP's story about "RA only" access)

I could always call a certain university in WA, USA and ask.. I am sure someone within the health and safety department would be more than helpful in answering my question directly... and putting this thread to rest.

(I love when people think the internet is anonymous)

I would actually like to know also.
My bet is that somebody jumped during finals week or something, and now they have to authorize every time the balcony gets open.

What floor ya on?

Thats probably it as well. If there was a fire and you needed to egress that method, the fire dept would quite easily remove the whole door for ya. ;)

yea, there would not be much of a fire escape going on here.
Unless you had a parachute or a rope with a bunch of knots.

If I promise not to pick the lock will you guys just tell me what is going on.
it gets completely stuck at 1/3 of a turn every time.
no amount of tension, or lifting up and down on the door will free it up.
