I don't know that schuyler posted it. I know someone posted some info on a 32 key set that I did some modifications to and then expanded it on my own to a 243 key set a couple of years ago or so when the smartkey was first released in Canada under the Weiser name. I went over the method with Marc Tobias when I finished the set up like I said a couple of years ago. If I can find my 243 key bitting list since I lost my hd of my locksmithing computer then maybe we can compare our bitting charts and see how they compare. Maybe between the two lists we can come up with an even better set.

I have used this tryout set and expanded it to 243 keys which are grouped according to the key in the 32 key set that almost operates the lock. So in use, you quickly try the 32 keys and note which one just about works. Then you refer to the group in the 243 key set that the key in the 32 key set points you to. Then you simply try the keys in the group referenced and the lock opens almost like you have the working key.
That list would be a huge time saver.

A huge time saver would be to DESTROY the worthless piece of junk lock and install something that offers the customer real security in it's place. The Kwikset smartlock is a joke.

It might be a joke, but because of it's price point and the fact that the unknowing unsuspecting public see them at HD, there will probably be many more out there that locksmiths will need to contend with.
I had a foreclosure the other day. Smartlock on FD. I went to back door and picked the Tylo. Pulled the smartlock apart, used the rest cradle to rest to new key, done!
This Kwikset smartlock is a boon for locksmiths because most often the new homeowner will not have a new set of keys with which to rekey to.
Locksmiths can go out and rekey all their doors in seconds, charging a per lock rekey fee and make some great dosh.
By all means, one should try to recommend upgrades to better quality, but most rekeys are just rekeys not new lock installs.

Some customers, even if it's a emergency lockout situation will not allow the locksmith they called to drill out the existing lock and sell them a new lock. And at this point in time I'd still rather use a destructive method if I was called out on a lockout job like this, but that means you gotta also have in stock a decent amount of replacement locks in your service van at all times. And that's if your customers is willing to buy a new lock to replace the one you drilled or whatever. But as a hobbyist I'd rather search out for something that can leave the lock functioning after we do our magic.

I'm the same way. It's one of many reasons why some of the guys I work with call me the mad scientist. The first day I was finally able to decode a smartkey lock was one of those mad scientist days.

Hey Zeke, did you ever find that list that helps you narrow down the use of the 243 set to a few keys by using the smaller 32 key set first?

Dude is Actually a "locksmith" - at a general/hardware store.. (hint, his email is his work email address- google fu if interested) You think thats bad, you should see his PM's and his responses from my PM response. Not someone I would want ever working on my house, or working as an employee for my company (or a company I worked with) But hey, they do things different in backwood places...

Eyes,
I haven't had a chance to look as alot of my locksmith stuff (including my masterkey software data) is on a crashed hard drive that I have been trying to recover. Right now I am more focused on getting my masterkey info hardcore as unfortunately I didn't back it up right before it crashed so I am missing one entire system. I have it printed but I really need the files back. I also need to get all my customer info back out of InstaCode. It is on the list to do (the smartkey info) but I haven't made it that far yet. Also, an FYI on the smartkey is that from what I have heard kwikset has added another cut depth to the specs so the tryout sets will only work 100% on older locks. It will still work on newer locks but you will run into some that it doesn't work on anymore. You'll be the first one I notify when I dig it out.

Got it, no rush. And are you saying that they added a 7 depth cut to it like a Defiant?
