By '"dealers" key', are you referring to a standard new car key from the factory? Or a duplicate key cut at by a dealer from the VIN, like the one I got today? I'm assuming the latter, implying that a locksmith with greater experience and better equipment will probably be able to cut a more accurate key from the VIN than the dealer... yes?

And... it's always possible that the guy at the parts counter today was misinformed about lead in the cylinders. It does sound preposterous.

The usuall cause for automotive lock problems are either a worn key or a stuck wafer. Getting a new key cut to code usually solves the worn key problem.
If its a stuck wafer , the code cut key can sometimes get it loose.
WD40 usually helps , but considering there is already graphite in the lock , it would only make things worse.

arent most auto locks made of die cast zinc alloy? definatly not lead, lead is heavy and its what makes my computer heavy from all the solder on the boards. If only they would hurry up and invent aluminum solder,.....

Just had a Toyota ignition cylinder in today.
It would only turn to ON and not past.
Took it apart and found one of the half wafers was broken in two.
I put in two new half wafers, but the key was so worn it would not turn.
Ended leaving that slot empty, and the key worked fine.
We get a lot of Toyota ignitions in from the dealer down the street for repairs.
They will usually bring in a brand new cylinder they want keyed to match another key.
