Use a follower, and then just slide the plug back into the the shell.

but if the point is to find out where the security pins are so i can focus on learning to pick them, wouldnt a follower prevent that?
or do i use it to take the drive pins out one by one, and then use it to hold them down so i can slide the plug back in?
Don't think Top Gear has taught you more about racing your civic than I learned by going to racing school.

Put the follower through the shell, and then slowly pull it back to see the driver pins. I use a tweezer to hold down the pins as I'm pulling the follower backwards, to see the pins. I'm sure others have a preference. Each to his/her own.

i bought a deadbolt with no security pins just to make it easier on myself. after a few days of working with it, i discovered i was drastically over setting the pins, and that i only needed to brush the feeler against them in a raking motion. but, as soon as i started being able to pick it fairly consistently, it went back to not responding. is this common with beginners? i cant for the life of me figure out what im going differently. tension seems to be the same, raking motion seems to be the same, etc

no wonder i feel lost and out of my depth. steel, spool, brass, spool, brass. on the plus side, before taking it apart, i did get it to pick twice. but the problem is that when i release the tension, its less a matter of unsetting the pins, and more a matter of the plug not counter rotating. my finger can be completely off, and its still stuck and wont let me push up the spool. is this because i had too much tension when it false set?

Yeah, this happens sometimes with me. Pretty much is what you need to do is release tension, but not release it all the way. As your doing that, try to find the security pin that creates counter rotation, and just push up alittle bit on it, until it sets.
