I LOVE my Falle picks. But admittedly, it's mostly because I got them for free!

Just when you finally think you have learned it all, that is when you learn that you don't know anything yet.

I love my Peterson's but I have picks from a bunch of different brands. My first Peterson's were a few spring steel picks with plastic handles. They are only $2.75 and are great to try out to see if you like them. Sure the Gov. Steel is strong, but if you don't like the handles, you don't like the handles and you're not out too much money. The spring steel is plenty strong and if I hadn't gotten an incredible deal on a gov. steel set, I would still be using my spring steel Peterson's. MBI wrote:I LOVE my Falle picks. Awesome! How much of a difference is there between the Peterson Reach and the Falle reach? I know there are a bunch of different Falle reach tools, not sure how much of a difference the different arcs makes. It would be fun to play with a set sometimes, but I don't think the Falle Kool-aid is for me.

Thanks Brian! Great photo. And from your previous post, I got a fantastic deal on a gently used Peterson Phoenix Ultimate set. I was waiting for the Christmas coupon to pick up some gov. steel picks, maybe a small set. I highly recommend it too, but I'm not a big fan of buying big sets, but as far as expensive sets go, it's phenomenal.

I like the Peterson Reach, but if you look at that picture you can see it thins in the middle and it is very prone to bending at that point unless you're very gentle with it.

I bought a spring steel Peterson Reach to try it out and it seemed reasonable strong. I was being pretty careful and one day it snapped on me. It's also the only pick I've ever broke. The Gov. Steel version is definitely stronger, but it definitely has a weak point. The slender flexes a lot but I've used it with great success in very tight or small keyways. Overall it's a good tool to have, but I wouldn't want to put much leverage on it.

Elbow Macaroni was saying the same thing about the Reach in chat. I was surprised to hear about the snapping point as I love the Reach and have both the carbon and government steel versions and they've never busted on me. I've even modified the carbon version to access extreme high-low bittings. It's odd that they haven't broken on me so far (I've had the spring steel version for 3 years) because I am notoriously heavy handed; when I first started working at a machine shop I would unintentionally break 1/2" bolts off from over-tightening, my manager would get so cheesed. But, as with all things that are fine until someone tells you what's wrong with them, I am sure my Reach will snap soon .
