I agree wholeheartedly with those who say you should just pick the lock, however, I looked into the thermite idea and it would cost you about $18.50 to order high-yield thermite and a roll of Mg ribbon.

That's true, it is very dangerous to use thermite since it burns at over 4000 degrees. I wouldn't reccomend it unless you know what you are doing, and as previously stated DO NOT use it over anything, or near it for that matter; if you put thermite on the hood of a car it would burn straight through the hood, than the engine, and whatever else may be in it's path.

I'm sitting here at the US Army MANSCEN school where they teach, among other things, the precise and calculated use of explosive charges and incendiaries. I think I may have some advice on the use of thermite. DON'T. It is dangerous. It will not "melt through anything" (though it may deal with a lock) I have placed it on an old safe to demonstrate it's use. The thermite sits there and fizzles and does nothing to the hardened steel casing. As far as freezing the metal goes, I'm sorry, but metal dos not behave that way. Dry ice or freon simply aren't cold enough - you couldn't make such a system field expedient. It would be far easier to use bolt cutters if you want to go the route of destructive entry, especially when the object of your affection is a padlock. To quote the venerable Napoleon Dynamite, God! Funny thing about thermite. It burns hot enough to actually "vaporize" the water molecules in concrete, during the solid concrete back into dust. Fancy, if somewhat dangerous, way to add that artistic ttouch to your driveway, or a neighbors if you are that type.

thanks sfgoon i was gonna correc the incorrect notions of thermite usage but ya beat me to it... thermite is good stuff especially real military thermite grenades but the anachist cookbook is not a thing you guys should be learning from or even playing with alot of stuff in it is false and dangerous if you were to attempt it(this is coming form someone taught true improvised munitions and Neko Ryu Ninjitsu among other styles if ya curious ask me) if ya really want experience with fun stuff go military E.O.D. then have fun that way...hahaha BTW i have purchased 5 locks in the last 2 days and picked each in under 30 secs now i must purchase a schlage my fiance wanted to purchase one the other day and i told her lets start with the more beginners ones honey...now i think im ready to tackle the schlage I also got her into lockpicking...so far 5 dead bolts 8 padlocks and all with improvised tools and homemade picks from allenwrneches filed down and fish hooks werent the greatest BTW I really think my best ones are small allen wrenches non tempered bent at the end and filed real flat or the prebent end cut and filed to a half diamond...next i make saw blade ones...then the pro sets :-)

I feel the progression from improv tools and homemade improv stuff was better then jsut learning with pro tools right off the bat

the stuff can burn through a WHOLE ENGINE BLOCK a stupid little lock wount be difficult for it
