It IS not the end of the world to tell the client that you simply cannot get them in, apologize and don't charge them. That won't be a positive point in your word-of-mouth account, but you won't get struck by a lightning bolt either.

OP again. Thank you all for your replies, I've learned from them all.

I think in a way the question I was really wanting to ask is the one Vector answered: how big a stigma on your pride/reputation drilling a lock carries.

Once you've exhausted every method of NDE that you can reasonably perform, the drill carries no stigma. 8)

re: concerning hardplate. Sorry, won't discuss it in public forums.

Gah you can't use that...middle of a snowstorm you might wnd up melting some of that precious precious snow :(
