I think this thread went off topic just abit?

The only decent reply was the electric pick, even if the question deserved stupid answers.

What sort of skills do you have?

You want something easy or something you may need to think about?

Are you capable of transferring the rotation to say,
an up and down motion? An in and out one?
A forward and reverse one?

If you want something simple, why not make:

An engraver?
A tattoo gun?
A nail buffer?
Air pump for a fish tank?
A 240 volt toy car?

I personally like DBs idea of the chainsaw blade sharpener.
That's what I'd do if I didn't have one.

mike-z: a sewing machine motor is a little larger than that...and runs off the mains.

You could always form a club where members race them, like the belt-sander-racing clubs. Get a plank of wood, cut a notch in the back, mount a rubber wheel on the motor, then mount it to the plank. Attach two wheels to the front, plug into a 50ft extension cord, then let 'er rip.

Or shall I go sit in the corner again? :P

i saw a show like that it was power tool derby and they where racing sand belts and screw drivers and all that crazy crap...
anyway if its not run by a battery its not going to do anything good for you in picking

I believe the question was "what can be made out of a sewing machine motor".
Generally, sewing machines don't run off batteries...

I don't doubt that you have seen portipal sewing machines, I haven't yet, but I think the OP's motor is run from the mains...

If you want a really neat little motor for making a pen-sized vibrating pick, try using a 3v motor from a pager or a cell phone. These already have the eccentric weight attached...you could simply attach a pick blade to the end of whatever cylinder you place the motor into, or make a mechanism which is acted upon by the eccentric weight.

Sorry mike, I was not in the best of moods, and was a bit of an a$$ quoting your 'portipal'. It's actually 'portable'....no offense I hope.
