We are a minority, our interests are not shared or understood by most people, when I offered to teach a good friend, his reaction was, sure I'd need to know that if I was going to break into places. I pointed out that he may want to break out of someplace, and it turned him around a bit, then of course theres the lockout where the place you want to get into is yours by right to get into. but the usual reaction to that is they will tell you that they never lose their keys, never. Many people are opposed to the very thought of picking locks. If they dont share the interest, they are most likely opposed to it.
suppose one was a hostage, and knew how to pick or bypass some locks, I would think that might be ok,
there are probably a lot of these hypothetical and unlikely scenarios that would apply, I just tell people its magic, real world magic. for some thats enough.
Wake up and smell the Kafka!!!

An friend of mine was bragging over how much more money she gets a fortnight than me (apprentice wage). I can't wait until she locks herself out.
/offtopic.
ontopic.
It's sad that people are too narrow minded and/or have been brainwashed by the media into that opinion. More people need to lock themselves out, methinks.

Picking locks is magic.. But like other magic, "The secret impresses no one. The trick you use it for is everything."
I opened some tool chests for the Navy a while ago. The Bosun was standing over me watching and when the first chest opened he said, "Oh.. that's it? I guess I was sort of expecting a flash or something.." and he walked away utterly disappointed in the whole scenario (not that I opened the chests for him, but that there wasn't more to it).
I guess I could have waved a magic wand or something.

I agree that a large part of lock picking to impress others is in the way you present yourself. I know that someone's going to say "well, you really needn't be showing off", but I disagree. Showing off is both alluring to the sport and important to the locksmithing profession.
Don't confuse showing off with flagrant disrespect for locksport ethics. It's one thing to make lock picking look fun, tricky, and tempting... yet quite another to whip out picks and start opening doors *because you can*. (I remind that only locksmiths pick open doors)
For the profession of locksmithing, I prefer plain old picks over electronic pick guns, because the customer wants to get what they paid for. They paid less to watch all 21 James Bond films, so it takes more than a door-opening-sex toy to get them to sign my check.

Is picking in public one of those kinky fantasies people have, like being nude in public?
Personally, if I ever had to pick someone else's lock in public, I would have to wait for a full moon, light candles, and lubricate the lock with a virgin's blood.

Did you miss the story on CNN? The administration is very concerned about this group.

Speaking of presentation and showing off, I'm reminded of an anecdote about the physicist Richard Feynman when he was working at Los Alamos. Every office had a filing cabinet secured with a three-number combination lock. He discovered that if a cabinet was left unlocked, he could decode the last two numbers without much difficulty. While in other people's offices he fiddled with the lock and soon had a list of partial combinations. Occasionally someone would need a document from another person's filing cabinet, who happened to be out of the office that day, and come to Feynman for help. He'd stop by his own office on the way, ostensibly to get a screwdriver, but actually looking up the combination. In the other person's office, he'd close the door for privacy and have the lock open in just a few minutes. He'd then spend another ten or fifteen minutes reading a magazine to make it look harder than it was.
This is the internet:
You don't have to capitalize, you don't have to use punctuation, and you don't have to spell correctly. And you will not communicate effectively.

excuse me, but i did not want to do another thread just for a single question!
You know, in movies and video game...
Some people pick locks, but they pick it in half a second and they are using a single pick and no tension wrench!
How do they do that?
watch the weather change
