For tough extractions I use a steel dental pick that was heated and bent into a very tight and short hook. Filed down after to make an even smaller profile. Insert and feel anywhere it catches on the obstruction. Hook the obstruction and pull while using a filed down straight dental pick to manipulate it looser as you pull.

Remind me to quote this to every n00b who doesn't want to buy real lock pick tools and insists that paper clips work just fine.
Well as you can tell by my name, i unfortunately started with the paper clips and I only used them because I couldn't find the $15 to buy an actual pick set. I picked a few padlocks with them, but once I got my picks, I regretted ever trying with paper clips. If anyone is going to get into this sport then they should invest the 15-20 dollars for a decent pick set. Kind of off topic but whatever. Oh and I never tried to pick locks in use with paper clips or my picks, I just don't want to risk it.

This is kind of off-topic, but here we go. One day I took out my brinks disc lock (I don't have the model number on hand, I got it at the local wal-mart for $8) and started single pin picking it with my short hook. To my surprise, the very tip broke off. So I was like, okay. I grabbed the key and opened it a few times and it spit the tip out through the top. This has no relation to deadbolts or whatever lock the guy had, but I thought id mention it.

I ordered a few picks from http://www.lockpickshop.com/. I got a short hook, a rake, a double ball, a half diamond, a tension wrench, and a broken key extractor all for about $15, and that included shipping. Also if you enter the coupon code lp101 you get a discount.

If this kid would have brought this cylinder into my shop, I'd have fixed it for free. In return, he'd have had to listen to a short lecture about what does and doesn't belong in lock cylinders. A short list of things I've removed from cylinders: paperclips, toothpicks, wooden matches, paper matches, straws, twigs of all sorts, cardboard, foil, gum wrappers, several food substances, superglue and on and on. It's better than oatmeal cookies in the vcr.
Don't believe everything you think.
