I was thinking some more about this. Rather than just setting the number of pins, macs, min spacing, etc. individually, what if the user just picks the brand? So you might choose from Schlage 5 pin, Best 6 or 7, and so on. Then we can default to the manufacturers suggestions for all the other settings, again with the option to change them. Some kind of 'wizard' interface might be best for creating new systems- then we could have prompts like "The manufacturer suggest MACS of 5. Do you want to change this?"
Oh wait... I just learned this holiday how terrifying command line is to most poeple...
I knew I was in trouble when I had to download tom's root boot disk... That teaches me to go anywhere without a rescue cd.

I too have been thinking along the same lines. A whole bunch of manufacturer default "data and rule sets" IE, depths, spaces, keyway(s) with ILCO #?, keying rules. The keyway/ILCO number may seem to be overkill now, but if support for multiplex systems is ever added, this information would be usefull. Loading one of these set up sheets would make things easy for commonly used systems, and should also allow for the locksmith to change parameters easily. One should definately be able to create new sheets if desired, say for example use Schlage depths on a Kwikset system.
Now, for GUI, I would like to show everyone the BLAST interface. BLAST is a program that matches DNA sequence data to other data already in the GenBank. I love how uncluttered the interface is. If you have questions abou a specific item, it is hotlinked to a help page. If you need the advanced options they are ready to be changed, but a reasonably good set of defaults is preloaded.
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/BLAST/Blast.cgi?CMD=Web&LAYOUT=TwoWindows&AUTO_FORMAT=Semiauto&ALIGNMENTS=50&ALIGNMENT_VIEW=Pairwise&CLIENT=web&DATABASE=nr&DESCRIPTIONS=100&ENTREZ_QUERY=%28none%29&EXPECT=10&FILTER=L&FORMAT_OBJECT=Alignment&FORMAT_TYPE=HTML&NCBI_GI=on&PAGE=Nucleotides&PROGRAM=blastn&SERVICE=plain&SET_DEFAULTS.x=34&SET_DEFAULTS.y=8&SHOW_OVERVIEW=on&END_OF_HTTPGET=Yes&SHOW_LINKOUT=yes&GET_SEQUENCE=yes
You also get some control over how your output is presented. We need to give serious thought to how the output is handled. I would like to see a pinning chart that is easy to understand and use. Anyone have any formats that they just love? Also on my wishlist is the ability to provide keycodes (blind if desired) along with bittings in such a way that this data could be easily imprted into a key management program (sister project?).

Was mentioned before, but have two setting, Advanced and Wizard, Advanced, you set all the options yourself, and Wizard guides you through...

project approved - https://sourceforge.net/projects/osmk/
since I've never been a project admin on sourceforge before I'll have to get my head around all the controls - I've added 32768 as a developer - hopefully that gives you access to add stuff to the webpage: http://osmk.sourceforge.net so we can stick requirements there.
I'm at work currently so I can't spend much time on it right at the moment but give me a few hours and I should have figured out how to work it.
Cheers!
WH.

sorry, you're there now - play away!
I'll re-read through this thread in my lunch break and start adding people/notes - we need a wiki or something.....

i made a quick webpage with a nice logo, if you'd like to use it i'll email it to you, and unless someone else is developing a website for it i could do that too, let me know if you'd like the file (filesize is around 12k) or development on the site, if you want me to make thge site i'd need 1 mysql database, with 2 users, one read only, and the other like a admin/read-write-create table deal, and some way to upload the files, i could do it in php-mysql if you'd like.

nothing's there yet - sourceforge allows you to assign tasks, have discussion forums, upload documentation and have a website.
sorry I havn't done anything as yet - been rather busy, will get to it during my christmas break..

Finally, after 30 mins of experimenting, I got the website that Jarod made to upload correctly.
Check it out at: http://osmk.sourceforge.net/

In the old days locksmiths were taught to do it with a pencil on paper, this was called masterkey progressions. you just write the number of your master, and whatever sub masters at the top of a page and then do progressions being sure never to use the depths for the masterkey. It seems to me that the whole process could also be done with McBee cards which is a step between the jacquard loom and the first computer. you wouldn't need many cards, but you would have to record the keys already used. These are cards with holes punched in them that are sorted by sticking long rods through the holes and lifting. there are a variety of ways to design them, holes on top, on sides etc.
Wake up and smell the Kafka!!!

*blows the dust of this thread and sets it respectfully on the table*
ok - so I had high hopes for this last year..... now I've got too much on my plate (and I probably still did back then) to be able to manage this effectively.
If anyone else would like to take it on I'll give admin rights to the osmk section on sourceforge...... if not then I guess it will start collecting dust again.
I'd like to see this through but I just really can't.
Sorry all.

, why did I just see the topic at this time
Anyway,
I though about something similar a while ago but I was feeling sooo bored at the time that I didn't start anything a forgot about the idea. I wouldn't take the responsabilities to be the admin of the project because i'm such a newbie in coding and the only language I know is C. If you need someone, I would be ready, but I can't promise anything
