While this maybe slightly outside the scope of the problem. I believe schlade makes a level doorhandle lockset that can be turned when locked but does not open the mechanism. I don't know if it works inside as well as outside, but then if they slipped their tool went over the handle and pulled down the handle would turn, their tool would slip off and the door would remain snugly shut.
