My is is working on going to 10mb down and 756kb up but I am not sure when this will happen. This summer is when it is scheduled. Those numbers will be reversed for clients downloading from me though. So it would be 756kb download and 10mb upload on the client side. I have tried the capping and queing with my ftp and it seems that every one prefers a slow connection over no connection.

i've got a 500k connection, but i cant host anything reliably, my ISP are driving me mad, the modem seems to be faulty and they keep leading me round in circles...

anyway, back to the topic, bandwidth was part of the reasoning for a cd, but oh well...

I was at Zekes site and the download was about 25kbs which aint bad for me. I was able to download the falle-safe template file in about 25mins. I'm also still with the cd method, the server/client would work well with zekes site. It could also be considered in the future as a host for a lockpicking/locksmithing site, even with its own forum. I'm saying this because i think the lp101 forum is excellent and i would hate to see it shut down at any time, but if it ever was it could be revived on Zekes site especially with even more bandwidth and the other goodies available. Btw i was playing the lockpicking game which i thought was awesome. If i was ever to teach someone lockpicking this would be the first tool i would use, as a visual aid to the internals of a pin tumler it is simply brilliant.

well thats about 3 or 4 people who are in favour of the CD method then, i'll post a poll about it (really should of have done this when i started the post), i'll get people to post whether they think it should be a cd or put the stuff on a server and leave it at that.

is there any way to add a poll to this topic or shall i just make it seperate with a link to this so people can read it and see what they think?

I can host the files ftp. We can make people have to register an account inorder to download the files. therefore, we can reduce the bandwith use and allow faster downloads.

Oh, and the people who register accounts would have to have over a certain amount of posts.

by the way, is there a way to edit posts?

theres no way to edit posts and mods cant change whether the edit and delete functions are on or off.

it sounds like people just want to put things on servers, so i'll just scrap the CD idea and we can put stugg on servers.

You should go ahead with the cd method too, i for one would certainly cover any postage costs etc for a copy. The cd method is a more immediate solution at the moment as the server method could take time and resources to set up.

A certain amount of posts threshold is a good idea, but i would suggest as Varjeal points out in the 'application for advanced forum access' that you could exclude posts such as 'i'm a newbie here where can i get picks etc.' these shouldn't count as posts.

im happy to go with the cds, it makes no real difference to me, its just that nobody seemed to want it. we'll get the cds made up and stuff and they can be sent out then. i'd only ask for postage costs and cd costs to be covered, just so i dont end up out of pocket.

anyone requesting a cd would have their posts reviewed before i agree to send one anyway, by no means would i like to provide criminals or just anyone with the means to pick locks.

i'll make up a final list or something and talk to one of the mod team about it just to make sure the content is ok, it should be since its all from the forum anywan, but i want to make sure. its not finished yet though so it'll be a while before that happens.

Well master in training you have my permission to put all of my templates and the videos I made on the disk. So here is your written statement from me  . I too agree that it is a good idea I just think you are going to be burning cd's left and right. I am not trying to push the server idea on anyone, it is just always going to be here as long as I can keep it. It started out as an ftp server that woked well for alot of us and did not work at all for some of us. This is what sparked my interest in setting up an http site. So far this has worked out very well and with the contribution of the members here it will continue to grow just as the ftp site did. My ftp site is still alive to lp101 users to upload information to. Once I look uploaded info over it will then be added to the http site so things are coming together well and will continue to be refined as time goes on. Please do not let this stop you from putting that CD out. I think it is a good idea for those who simply cannot download the material due to a dial-up connection.

thanks zeke :D always good to have some support. since you're always adding files to the ftp, can i make a cheeky request, mainly to make things easier for me really when adding things to the cds as new things get uploaded  could you put dates or something on items as you upload them so that i can have some idea of which i already have and stuff, theres a lot of info to go through checking for new files

i've got in text files i've created authors of the posts, dates posted and topics it was posted in, i'll go through them all PM'ing authors asking for permission to include their posts just to make sure no-one minds. when i get around to it of course! so if you've made some good posts, you may get a PM from me, if you dont and you think you've made some worthy posts, send me the links!!

On the new additions to the site I'll put a little icon that says new or something similar to draw attention to it. I'll leave them up for say 30-45 days then they new tag will come off. How does that sound?
