I carry them everywhere..but then I carry one of everything everywhere.

Unless you're up to no good, you won't ever have a problem. If you ARE up to no good, you'll probably be charged with Impersonating a Locksmith or whatever trumped-up charge (in the UK it's "Going Equipped") they can throw at you for the mere fact you have lockpicks on you (which I would guess depends on the state you're in) along with the main reason you were stopped.

So stay out of trouble and you won't get shaken down. This isn't 1984. My guess is all the "guides" on the internet parrot the old chestnut about how it's illegal to possess lockpicks in the State of Such-and-Such because it's a glamorous, dangerous and exciting thing to have them. In practice, nobody cares unless you're actually breaking a law.

Well living out here in California, my rule is to rarely go out with them on me and if I do have them to have them in a not so suspicious area to stave of accusations of malicious intent, but then again any intent would be considered malicious intent here.

I haven't had mine for long, but yeah, I keep em in my pocket or my backpack pretty much at all times.

In Colorado, the law is basically that as long as you don't have intent to commit burglary, they're legal to posses. The minute you show intent to use them in an illegal fashion is the minute you run into legal issues. :)

I recently put together a set to keep in my car, but I don't carry any on me. I don't need more stuff in my pockets.

I made this little guy out of a hacksaw blade on a grinder about a year and half ago because I wanted a pick I could carry and not care if I lost it or it was ruined. I added some heat shrink and I had my "throwaway". The keyring hole was never used because I figured it would be bent up, smashed in my pocket next to a bunch of keys. I keep it in one of those self-test breathalizer tubes they gave us once before going on leave. The wrench is (obviously) just a bent bobby pin so there's never a shortage of those (I like the top tension, I like it a lot). Now after all this time I almost want another throw away because I like this one so much.

I keep a jackknife pick set on my key ring. Interestingly enough it has never been used as I have never encountered a situation where I have needed to pick something ad hoc. I almost always know when I'm going to have to open something and I usually bring my regular pick set for that as the handles are easier to hold.

I also live in California like a few of the other people in the above post; but I don't feel as paranoid about carrying a set of picks with me on a day to day basis. For the most part there really isn't an issue as most people do not do anything that would necessitate a police officer searching you. If you are being searched by the police, even on a yearly basis, you must be doing other things wrong and lock picks are the least of your worries.
