How would a locksmith do this ?

Postby ThE_MasteR » 1 Nov 2005 20:34

I have a Masterlock No.532, for some of you who don't know, that was given to me by a close friend of mine, and he doesn't have the keys for the lock. I wanted to know if it was possible to go to a locksmith and make a key for this lock ? If it is possible, how would he proceed ?

Thanks

A locksmith, assuming you only have one lock, would possibly recomend that you buy a new one as it may be cheaper than having a key fitted to it.

Yeah I read that, it's a very nice guide, except I don't have a removable cylinder, so I can't do that.

I think this lock is well worth over 20$. I don't think a locksmith would charge that much just to get a key done for it, or am I mistaken ?

I would agree that a locksmith would probably just say buy a new lock. I mean, I'm not sure what the cost would be to impression a key, then cut a proper one, but it's gotta be more than $20.

Depends on where you go on how much it will cost. The locksmith will likely impression a key for you while you wait if he or she is not busy.

Hey, just a thought... why not use this as an opportunity to learn to impression a key? :) Get a couple blanks from a locksmith and have a go at it.

According to masterlock, that lock costs $10-15 depending on shackle size. If he were to bring that lock into the shop I work at, it would run him about $15 to make a key for it. A new lock comes with two keys too.

Being a pin tumbler, these locks can be tricky to impression if you don't have a bit of practice. Our shop charge is roughly $12.50, and about ten minutes.
As it turns out, there is only 1 way to do things...right, and fast.
