I got my very first 4:20am call last night. Oh, the joys of being 24/7...
Anyway, the call basically wanted to know how much I charged to come out and change a lock "tomorrow"! Who the hell calls up at 4:20am to ask how much it will cost for a job tomorrow?!?! I tell her £45 daytime, then try to go back to sleep, wondering if she meant Saturday or Sunday.
8:20. You guessed it. Little Miss Asian Insominac calls again, and asks me to come out. I tell her £55 before 10am on a weekend, and she says "I'll call you back at 10 then"! Argh! Mind you, this time she asked if I was in bed, which she hadn't at silly o'clock in the night...
Anyway, it's now 11, and she hasn't called back... I can't wait for tonight. At least a random 4:20 wake-up call will be spot on for the Car booting start tomorrow.

People take the 24hour literally so i now advertise 24 emergency opening and its cut down the goon calls. Dont worry its not just us that get them, my sister in law is a lawyer and they advertise a 24 help line in case you need legal assistance meaning if you have been arrested. She got a lovely call at 3am from a guy who wanted to know if he could take his watch back, that he brought a few years earlier, as it had stopped working . They are out there, i know, i get stupid calls all the time. The classic is "how much is it to change a lock?" " what sort of lock is it ? a yale type or chubb type ?" " i dont know, how much is it ?". I get this conversation at least 3 times a week.

This happened all the time with the last locksmith I worked for. They had a deal, 6am-10p was one price, 10p-midnight was another price, and midnight-6am was yet another price... I'd get calls in the middle of the night, mostly from hotel/motels. Most of the time i'd just go out and take care of 'em, and charge them the lower rate - just so I wouldn't get a call at 6:05a.

The voice that makes you want to punch a baby...
I know what your talking about. People do that to me at freaking school! Kids call me up at like 2. Dont even introduce themselves, and just start asking questions about stuff.
Dane Cook, a comedian has sort of a funny segment on his CD called The BK lounge which kind of reminds me of this topic.

Well, the good news is, she did call back, at ten to two yesterday. I popped round, getting a bit confused at the door.
I thought she said 25, but she said it was a wooden door! 23 is wooden and open, and so is 27... So I call back to the office, and ask for her phone number, call her up and yes, I'm outside her house!
So it was a Euro lock swap - and I didn't even have to pick it, since she had the key, too! I charged her £40 for it anyway... I'd quoted £45 thinking it was a locked mortise, so £5 off for that, instead of the usual £35 I'd have charged for swapping a Euro... Sometimes it's a nice job, this! Effectively an etra £5 for waking me at 4!
I even showed her how to lock the door properly, and how to tell the difference between wood and white plastic.

pixel, cheers for that!
I went to a call out on Wednesday night, and the bloke looks at me and says, "Oh great, and he's even got his cowboy outfit on"! Cheeky bugger! Leather jacket and a hat to keep the rain off. I just grinned, then hand picked their front door.

Welll i had a loverly one last night at 11pm, im locked out and the keys are inside. Ok no problem so i get to work picking this old yale with no luck. About 45mins later and after trying everything wendt, hpc, mica etc it only seemed to set on the spools. The letterbox was a no no as it was vertival and bent where she tried to get her hand in it. Out comes mr dewault as im getting fed up now and gonna give her a free lock so i can go home.Drill the lock and no joy, remove the lock and it appears the snib has been dropped, no wonder it wouldnt pick. After several minutes hammering the back box off the door and getting in i discover the reason for the dropped snib, yes youve guessed ist the bent coat hanger lying on the floor she didnt tell me about. She had tried to get in herself and must have pulled down the snib arrrrrrrrrrrrgh, a 2 minute job turned into a 2 hour job then she says you said it would be £70 after i tell her the price for the new back box.

Its a little button on the latch that can either hold the latch in the open position or when the latch is released it can be used to sort of deadlock the latch, it stops the lock being carded and the latch lever being oporated.
