Somebody just tried stealing my 1998 Blazer. In doing so they broke a drill bit inside. Is there any idea on how I can recover the ignition to put my key back inside. Or is there a recomended site to where I can buy a new ignition. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks

You may be able to straighten out a barbed fish hook or something of the like and fish out the broken drill bit, but barring that, you'd probably be best suited to let a professional look at it.

Interesting... I hadn't noticed that.
Anyway... the question is benign, and so long as the answers remain that way, I'm gonna leave it open.

If you haven't noticed that everytime that I talk about a car lock, it gets shut down. The first 3 questions had to be revised because after further review it did sound a little shady. I'm not askinghow to break into a car I'm not asking how to or at what angle to do something. All I am asking is a little help with starting up a potentialy wonderfull business and now that I have a busted window, a broken steering column, and a drill bit hanging out of the key hole I'm asking for hellp on that too. When I found this site everybody was great. They said that this site was for information...Free information. Which made it sound a little more interesting. But all I get is acusations. Please if you have information please help and if not please leave room for people eho can.
It is a 1998 chevy blazer.... I think that I am going to have to buy a new ignition for it.
So my questions are. Where can I find a cheap ignition lock or what type professional should I call. Next time I'll make my question less open to interpretation.

Don't worry about the harsh welcome, it's our form of hazing.
Call around your nearest automotive locksmith. He'll take care of the broken drill bit and recommend a dealer to get a new ignition. If he can't, he's a pretty sh*thouse auto-lockie.

That was the kind of response that I was looking for. I guess that I'm still a little ticked of that they broke everything. They could take anything so they just started braking stuff. They broke my window, steering column, cd deck, glove box, and the only thing they took was my Ipod deck. Its just frustrating. You know?

Yes I feel your pain, my Isuzu Rodeo was stolen recently , fortunatly I got it back in 1 piece with minor damage .. $400 for the tow yard / storage fees
and they stole what tools / supplies were in there Fortunatly , I had removed the "best " stuff because I was setting up for a big job in my gararge .
But the did get a tool box with my hole saws and drill bits and a couple of drills .
The interesting thiong is they took a box of "BATES " Safe deposit box locks ... what the hell are they going to do with 'em ?
Bates went out of business in the 30's .. not much call for 'Bates SD box locks

Ring round your local scrap yards (breakers yards, dont know the term for your part of the world, sorry) it sounds like you need a few more bits than the ign, you will probably get all the bits you need second hand for the price of a new ign,
They should be able to tell you how to get the old ign out and fit the new one, its very easy to do but for obvious reasons i cant say here.
Have a ring round your area and see what you get, sometimes that old truck you pass on your way to work in someones yard is being used for spares slowly by the owner, they may sell you the bits also.

I know our local Advance Auto has the cylinders. Ya might check there. Other than that, definitely check with a local locksmith (try checking in the Yellow Pages) - but i'm suprised that someone up here isn't local to you hasn't offered to help...

1998 Blazer?
Anyone know if this model had PASSKey, or VATS? If your vechicle has any of these systems, it may be required for you to visit a local lockie or dealer to ensure none of the systems were damaged, otherwise, your vechicle still may not start even if you put a new ignition in. With all of these anti-theft systems out there, I am suprised that auto theft hasn't plunged.

The ign cylinder replacement should be a fairly easy task on the blazer. I have not worked on that particular year so I am unsure if it is VATS or Transponder equipped but replacing the ignition cylinder itself is as simple as pulling the airbag/steering wheel, turn signal assy, then removing the single bolt that retains the cylinder in place.
I have not worked on one that new, so hopefully someone who has can chime in and say if the procedure is the same or not.
For the best book out there on high security locks and their operation, take a look at amazon.com for High-Security Mechanical Locks An Encyclopedic Reference. Written by our very own site member Greyman! A true 5 Star read!!

Looking at my code software it doesnt appear to have a transponder, so just remove the ignition and repair or replace.
