bump keys

Okay, my interest in lockpicking has been renewed... I watched the video on bump keys & was surprised that the method has only now been 'perfected' or brought more into the spotlight. I dont understand why places like southord and other online stores aren't selling bump keys and was kinda curious as to why that is or if they'll start selling them eventually... What do you guys think of bumping? I imagine it's frowned upon in this forum

I think that it is a boring method for opening locks. it takes out all of the skill. I think it is great for someone who is locked out and have locks like assa or dom, and need to get in quickly.

I wouldnt go as far to say it takes no skill. Ive only done minimal stuff in bumping, but its not as fool proof as it first sounds (to me at least). Also, If you dont want to damage the lock, you need to be careful

I second that. I don't think that bumping is the magic bullet that people who haven't done it much tend to think it is. It's cool. Often works well. But is far from automatic. For me, it's just another little tool in the arsenal. I'd rather know how to than not, but beyond that, I'd rather practice picking.

well these responses are similar to what i expected. but the question still lurking in the back of my mind is why aren't bumpkeys for sale yet? it seems like it could be a huge market...

well granted bump-keys are not 100% effective they are bloody effective after a lot of practice.

Places do sell them, but it's mainly to locksmiths.

and also just get some cut yourself, or do like I did and just make then with needle files.

They can be very very effective on high security locks if you have the means to get the bump keys cut accurately. Some keys you can cut yourself with files. Some you cannot.

As previously stated, bumping takes practice. Get some locks, cut some bumpkeys and start practicing .

simple dimple types can be done with a dremmel, or a hand-drill with the right size piece - although they work so nicely with matador rakes it doesn't seem worth it on the simple ones.

There is a dimple lock I have with 4 spools out of 7 that is giving me a bit of grief - that might be worth bumping for a bit

I agree it's a little weird not to see more bump keys and related implements sold commercially. I suppose it still hasn't really broken through the locksmithing mainstream.
