picking a normal schlage lock? im from the US and started recently, i can get weslock, kwikset, master locks, just fine. but schlage i can not get. is there some sort of trick or something i need to look out for? its just the normal, regular schlage front door deadbolt. i searched and didnt find anything on this type.

Schlage locks are just like any other residential pin-tumbler lock, plus or minus a security pin or three.
If I were you, I would click HERE and follow the process in order to improve your picking skills. No tricks, just practice is needed.

Schlage are typically a bit harder than the locks you've previously opened mostly due to better construction. One thing that I find helpful on Schalge locks is to tension the lock from the bottom (as I usually would) but rotating counter clockwise. I find that the tension wrench fits nicer this way on these keyways (standard Schalge residential ... um... SC something if I recall) and allows you more room for you pick.
But, it is still a somewhat harder lock to pick. It may also be that you have a more difficult combination on the pins.
You may benefit from going through this exercise:

Just one more note. I don't think I've ever come across a security pin in a standard residential Schalge lock. The only security pins I've seen in a Schlage residential were put there by me.

Thanks for posting the correct link db, I meant to link to that excercise in the first place, but it looks like I was too hasty in hitting the "Submit" button.
goph, do as the ninja (db) says, it's good for you.

hey thanks for the info! ill have to search on what a security pin is though. but db, im past that step in removing pins. i did that on the kwikset. im unable to do that on the schlage though, cause when i strip it bare, i cant gain access to the pins cause where i would take the pins out, metals bent on a single sheet of brass to keep the springs and pins in place so i cant take the top off. but thanks again!

Something tells me you may not be disassembling the cylinder quite right. I would read THIS and see if it helps out at all. Good luck!

If you say so, though if it's a Schlage residential that's tripping you up, I'd beg to differ. And, all deadbolts/key-in-knob cylinders can be disassembled.
Cheers!

Sorry for the thread revival, but i thought this information deemed useful for future use.
I did end up picking 1 out of the two schlage deadbolts i have, and 4/5 pins were security pins. once i picked it the first time, the following times seemed to come easier. I dont know if theyre getting stuck or i just simply mastered the technique and the feel, but i can get the one. The other, though, I still can not get. The lock itself looks the same (few cosmetic differences), but i dont know if theres going to be different pins or whatnot. guess ill just have to pick it and find out.
currently working on a Best SFIC (i got the peterson tension tool with the teeth). trying different techniques, pin by pin and ripping so far. ripping, i can get pins to stick but i think im oversetting some. ill keep working!
