Looking for source of 'nifty' locks, eg, "computer keye

Postby Raccoon » 21 Dec 2005 19:36

I'm looking for sources to purchase some "high security" locks, or at least locks that look more secure. Very few places (if any?) sell locks with "computer keys" or other non-standard unlocking mechanisms... such as magnetic and RF keys. I live in a very unusual techie town with people who would love to buy such locks.

It seems these are more available in Europe, but are there any American sources?

Well, I was hoping that the Locksmith Business Information forum would have information for locksmith businesses. Purchasing locks from another locksmith would be rather ineffecient and just a tad expensive. And as originally stated, nobody sells them here. Locksmiths included.

Heh, "computer keys" are an 80's term for keys with bumps cut into the sides of the key instead of the top or bottom. Very difficult to pick or duplicate, and just nifty to see on one's keyring. Though you probably know this already and were just preluding to the link.

Thanks for the link, btw. Very cool technology. 8)

Wow. If you want cool techie locks, those'd do quite nicely I'd think. Nice locks!

Ebay can be very good for unusual locks, particularly if you're open-minded about what you want.

Maybe try searching that every week?

This ScanLock is something you might be interested in.
The ASSA desmo (I'm bid up to $16.01 on it, you may outbid me if you like) uses a dual-sidebar principle.

Dang, outbid again  . I never win any of these ebay auctions  .
For the best book out there on high security locks and their operation, take a look at amazon.com for High-Security Mechanical Locks An Encyclopedic Reference. Written by our very own site member Greyman! A true 5 Star read!!

Has anybody else noticed that Ebay's servers appear to be running very slow (all the time)? I wonder if it has anything to do with the Cogent and Level 3 dispute (http://ask.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=05/10/05/2247207&tid=95&tid=187&tid=4)
