Which lock to start with?

Postby Arkanii » 22 Dec 2005 10:41

Hi ya'all,

Iv'e read a fair few threads now and got a book on lockpicking called "lock picking basics". Iv'e read the book and feel confident. I'm gonna order a set of picks soon after christmas. But which lock should i get first?

well you could have searched, but now you've posted it's to late so never mind :)

I used an "Era" deadbolt cylinder to begin with and took it apart - then moved up from there - I got it from Ebay for like £4 or something like that. It's a standard cylinder, and you simply remove all but 1 pin and then move onto 2, then 3, then 4, then 5... it's good because you can move down a level if you are having difficultiy.

Here's a guide to taking apart a lock.

basicaly any lock that you can take apart will be your best bet.

Padlocks are okay but not as good as a deadbolt cylinder... although on some you can make them repinnable even though they weren't designed for it... works well
I'd reccomend trying padlocks after you can pick deadbolt cylinders though... but then again i's up to you.

I don't know the book you mention, but have you tried the MIT guide?
it might be worth a look and can be found in the FAQ section - the language is a bit boring but rock-solid stuff.

Also read db's lockpicking exercises... it needs a bit of a push to learn this stuff but if you get a solid understanding now you'll thank yourself later.

As you can see I'm in a right-good mood today :D

Hope this helps ya mate :P
