I was wondering if anybody out there picks single pins with the hook pick. I use the half-diamond all the time, but I would like to know how to use the hook properly. It just doesn't seem to maneouvre the way I need it to.

I always use the hook. The only time I use other picks is when I try out locks that I haven't picked, and try to rake them, just to check if it works...wich it seldom does exept on cheap-ass locks...

I used to use only the rake (my handle is Rakemaster after all).
Since I've gotten more advanced I use the hook. The course on
crypto.com is on using the hook. Some of the advanced pick sets
I've seen (anyone wanna get me an xmas presant???) have mostly
hooks.
I picked my first schroon pin with a hook last week.
Looks like if you wanna get good, you gotta lean the hook.

I started with the hook, I like the way it feels being able to pinpoint and lift single pins. Though I haven't been able to get the rake right since the lock I was working with were in horrible working order and I didn't get a chance to clean and lubricate them.
I'll try anything 5 times.

And now the question is...what is the hook and what is the rake?
According to my books, and the shops that I've seen on the net, the hook is the one that is pointed, and slightly bent. Bur according to an edition of the MIT-guide that I read somewhere, this was called a rake, and the rake was called a snake...so...the definitions seems to be kinda splitted.
In my eyes... this is a hook, and this is a rake...

Yea, thats how ive always known it and havent met anyone who has called them different. The hook is certainly a hook and the rake above is certainly a rake!

I use a variety of hooks. Among my favorites are the 3 styles offered by Petersen

if at first you don't succeed - drill it.

hmm...I've never heard of a half rake or a full rake. The only rakes I've heard of is the simple rake, sometimes called the snake rake, i suppose. And then of course the rakes that looks like keys.
I don't define balls, double-balls, half-balls, diamonds etc. as rakes...but maybe that's just me
