Pick resistant

Postby AWC » 11 Dec 2003 21:53

The Kwikset deadbolt lock has been mentioned a few times to get to use to practice on. Curious, what or why do they say it's pick resistant?

The Titan deadbolt has 6 pins, so it *should* be more pick resistant than say a five pin lock. WIth the resistance coming from the fact that you have to pick another pin. Flimsy advertising claim if you ask me.

I would agree with chucklz, but maybe they have a spool or mushroom pin in them?

Never seen a spool/mushroom pin in any Kwikset I've ever seen, unless a locksmith decided to be daring and different. Just a note though, the Abus KW1 keyway (and Schlage C keyway etc) padlocks do have spool pins, placed randomly. But as usual, no more than 4 in a 5 pin lock, or 5 in a 6, but usually there are between 1 and 3.

It must be the amount of pins it has. It does say 5 pin, pick resistant on the package. I've already opened by scrubbing with Half Diamond. :D Thanks!

the best way to learn something is to discover it your self dude, read MIT, covers spools and mushrooms. Then, still having problems, ask.

well see it is vey dark inside a lock and often lock manufacturers will exploit this by growing anti-pick fungi in the back of the plug.
This fungi wil resist your attempts to pick the lock by binding up the plug at the shear line.

I keep hearing everyone here refrencing an MIT document that has something to do with picking locks
chances are beter than good that this is covered in that

Saying a lock like a kwikset is pick resistant gives the consumers a feeling of more security in the product. If a criminal wants to steal your property, most will not even have a thought of picking your locks. If more people used higher security strike boxes, longer screws, door reinforements etc... maybe thieves would try to bypass the pins, instead of the door itself.

I hate it when fungus grows in my lock. Its so dark in there, just great conditions for the little buggers. I find many locks from China are susceptible to these fungi, but even better makers are not immune
