Junior Hacksaw Blades

Postby Olcaytug » 17 Jan 2006 6:31

I bought a few packs of junior hacksaw blades. Ten blade packs are for about 2USD, and they are referred as "carbon steel".

But they don't snap like the blades in Pyro's video, or my other standard hacksaw blades. Instead, they are soft and bendable, like windshield wiper inserts. Should I heat them for bending while making tension wrenches? Can I make picks out of them (they are a bit thinner than standard hacksaw blades)?

Regards...

They are better used for tension wrenches rather than picks. You can get two wrenches from one blade (cut down the blade lengthways). Be sure to remove the teeth.

You know, I've never liked that idea of ripping a junior in two and making two wrenches from it. That's an awful lot of work to get two sub-par wrenches. I'd take a pass on the juniors myself.

Thanks for the answers!

Should I heat them for bending? Because they bend easily even with hand! Is it due to the bad tempering of the material?

Not as much work as you think, Db. I've still got the first wrench I ever made and it was from a junior blade. It's still one of my favourites. It has a tapered end that fits into a lot of keyways and holds them better than my SO wrenches do.

To each their own. :)

Well, I wasn't only guessing. I've made some myself, but I really thought it was just too much effort for a wrench that's too thin (not wide, but thin).

You're right. To each their own.
