Australian Lock Pick

Postby aussiepick » 30 Jan 2006 2:34

Hi guys,
I have just taken up lockpicking as a hobby and have invested some money into buying some pin tumbler locks and have made some picks using PYRO's video for instruction. I have picked two different pin tumbler locks and I feel im ready to buy a lock pick set. I can't buy any sets in Australia so im thinking of buying from America. I have looked at the store suggestions in Pheniox's post ( viewtopic.php?t=1423 ). I would like to know if there is any difference in American locks to Australian. If so what picks would I need to get? I have done a bit of searching on this site and can't find any previous posts on this subject. After reading the Law post ( viewtopic.php?t=2850 ) on this site I noticed that a person in Australia is only allowed to possess a lock pick in their own house. Seeing as the pick set would need to be shipped to Australia would it get through customs? Any information would be appreciated, thanks!
Once again, Hello everyone at LP101!

Order a standard set, Locks in America are very much the same as they are in Australia.

Customs won't take your picks unless you order a book on how to use them.

They really only take your picks if you have a book on how to use them?
Is that policy, or do you think that a custom person just thinks, 'cool, i can learn how to do this' ? not that I'm in Australia, I'm just curious.

Come up with a business name, and have the package addressed to that name to your home. Try: "Koalaty Locksmith" ;)

For decent beginner/intermediate lockpicks, I enjoy http://www.lockpicktools.com. They're especially useful if you only want to buy one or two picks, or customize a pickset to your specific needs. They also include your company name on the address label if you supply one.

:D I usually refer to bolt cutters as Austrialian lock picks! I'm sure you're more skilled than that though...

If this is the case I would tell whoever you order from not to send any instructions on using the picks. I just ordered a set from Southord and they came with a small book called Easy Pickings, a self teaching manual in the technique of lockpicking.

There's plenty of ways to get picks in Aus. You just gotta be resourceful.

I agree, if you just buy a set from lockpick.com or southord.com or a main supplier your in good shape. I have had trouble buying through places that only sell a few items as "novelties" in the past. Now I just use a good site and have no problem. Under your company name, just fill in something like open seasame inc. or even something lame like toms openall co. Whatever. just have a reference on the package to some sort of locksmith type name an dyou will be in good shape. if you are unsure, try a sample order for maybe 2 single picks or something. It sucks to pay the shipping to find out, but if you do, then you will know for sure. Worst case scenario you loose a couple buck, better than loosing a whole set of picks!!!
I hear what you are saying.....that doesn't mean I agree with you....Just that I am nodding my head to placate you and silence your futile attempts to win the argument.

Just did a bit of researching and called the customs. If I try to get the picks through customs I would be in more trouble than if I was caught outside my 'abode'. So, I guess i'll have to stick to making my own picks. Thanks for the willingness to help though guys.
Cheers!
