Ordering from peterson...okay for "enthusiast"?

Postby bprzybyl » 6 Feb 2006 14:45

Hello,
I wanted to pickup some peterson picks (Just picks - Rubber). But when I got to the page, I noticed the "Sale only to bona-fide..." They didn't say that they would not send a package to me, just that they would charge me for perjury (go here: http://www.peterson-international.com). Has anyone ordered from them before? If I can't, are there any other routes I can take?

Thanks,
Brooks Przybylek

P.S. Sadly, this whole ordeal is in part due to the fact that I am currently unable to find my favorite red hacksaw half diamond. Somehow inbetween picking and whatknot I have misplaced it :(

The bona-fide locksmiths part is more of a legal cover-your-derriere disclaimer. I don't think many people actually observe it.

Like all disclaimers, they don't even mean that when they say it.

It's a good set, you'll like them.

Peterson Picks

Postby Covlocks » 8 Feb 2006 5:23

These are excellent picks and very durable, however they are expensive and because of that they self restrict - that is, only the pro's normally want something that expensive and durable. For normal amatuer use just go for Majestic basic set because you wont notice any difference.

Expensive?

Postby bprzybyl » 25 Feb 2006 22:57

Petersons are considered expensive?
They're only about $5 more than a comparable SouthOrd set. Would anyone recommed against them? I'm deciding between a set of 9 petersons or the 32 piece "blemished" sets from SouthOrd.

Thanks.

SouthernOrd Prices

Postby Covlocks » 26 Feb 2006 17:02

Cant vouch for SouthernOrd's marks ups, but I guess that they are Majestic or HPC Picks, which are substantially less costly that Petersens. As I said before they are very good, very durable and I have a number of the tools myself - but I use them every day so it is worth me paying the money. The key extraction kits are very expensive and far superior than anything else on the market, but again I use them every day.

When I first started out I found buying a new HPC or Majestic set once a year or 18 months a good way of replacing those broken, bent or missing picks - about $18 at todays prices- add a few spiral extractors and thats all I needed.

As my work role changed I found that everyday usage did take it toll so I upgraded to Petersens. I have still had to replace those - but they definately have a better life span.

I've got southords, petersons, falle-safes, and now recently HPC. Unless you've got the money for the falle-safes, I'd recommend HPC head and shoulders above any of the others.
http://www.lockpicks.com stocks them, along with Petersons, and they essentially cater to hobbiests.

I've invested hundreds of dollars in lock picks now, and despite my urge to buy more and more lock picks, the only ones I really use are my HPC hook and half diamond, and Peterson plastic handled hook and half diamond. I would highly recommend the Peterson plastic set, and possibly add an HPC hook and half diamond. Email the people at Lockpicks.com; they should have the HPC picks in stock, they're just not listed on their website.
