ACE II Code listings

Postby Nasydave » 15 Feb 2006 23:51

I know there was a manual published that gave key cuts for the number stamped on the lock, but I have yet to have ever seen the list offered for sale anywhere.

Am I missing something, or is the list so out of date it's no good anymore? I know Chicago suit the publisher back in 1982, so it could be it's no longer available.

hmmm.... no. Do you have some examples of the codes. I've only seen three digit codes stamped in the face of the lock which are only chartable to the independent keying of a private list.

Generally, when I've seen 5-8 digit codes... they've been directly attributed to the pins. Some pins being duplicated and therefore being dropped from the code as part of the site.

For example: a 13573 could be attributed to a pinning of 1353773 cut on a seven pin lock if you accept that pins 2 and 4 (and 5/6) are always pinned identically according to a site rule. Effectively... 135x7y3) where x and y are dropped from the final code because they match pins in position 2 and 5.

Other than that... No... I've seen no coding published anywhere.

...anyone else??

Evidently what the publisher (fansworth??) did in 1980 or so was have locksmiths write down the code stamped on the front of the lock (for ex, PR2437) and then write down the key cuts that went with that code.

After he got enough of them, they published the list. Chicago Lock filed suit against them and lost, and supposedly he kept selling the lists.

At one time (2003) a poster (pixlox) offered a copy of the listing here, and I asked him for one, then he disappeared.

I figured someone who had been around for a while may have seen one. I have read that it wasn't to be relied upon since most locks will have been rekeyed since that time, but who knows? I'm sick of drilling those 7 pin offset ACE IIs, and seem to have no luck picking them.

The Peterson Pro-1 will do the offset tubulars no problem. Except for the initial investment.

Even with the peterson, I seem to have problems. I hope it's lack of practice, and not lack of skill....;-)

More practice! The peterson is much more difficult to use than the "impression" picks. But, it is so much more versitile, and will do so much that those picks cannot.

I have found that the peterson pick is much easier to use when the lock is not held in your hand. If the lock is not mounted in something, place it in a vise, the pick will work much better for you. I had trouble using the pick on some locks until I made a homemade stand to hold both tubular locks and padlocks, it made a noticeable difference. Hope this helps.
