One more Keyway for you

Postby searsman05 » 17 Feb 2006 3:17

I came across this best core a little while back and again have never seen this Keyway either. I plan on trying to pick it first for some practice but then i am going to punch the pins out and re-key it for one of my padlocks but i just need to know if anybody here can help me figure out what Keyway it is so i can go buy some keys for it. I have searched and searched for a document or pictures of best keyways but i just cannot find anything with there keyways, If anybody know where there is a Keyway chart or anything please let me know.

Here are the pictures let me know if you have any suggestions or if you know what this is.

Thanks to anyone that help me out.

That sure isn't a standard "lettered" keyway BEST cylinder. The raised plug gives that away. I don't see any marking that it is KABA Peaks however, which would be my guess on this core. The raised plug, rounded top of keyway, and what looks like a check pin to me still makes me beleive this is something from the Peaks line, perhaps a custom/restricted keyway?

I agree with the KABA Peaks that Chucklz stated. I am pretty sure that Peaks uses many many different restricted keyways. I stopped by their booths at the '05 ALOA show and looked at some of their peaks display locks. Some are very paracentric and would be fun to try and pick :P .

The fact that the core lacks a Best stamp makes me beleive that this core was either made by Kaba before Best licensed the Peaks system, or that it is a custom keyway.

Either way, you will have a heck of a time getting a keyblank, as I beleive they are still under patent protection, so you will have to go through Kaba.

Picking these locks can be fun, or absolutely miserable depending on bitting and keyway. I only had a chance to play with one once, and it was with a forgiving keyway. Your keyway looks difficult, but not miserable. Don't forget to take care of the checkpin with either a modified tension tool, or just pick the thing.

My first thought was this thing has got be to restricted because it does not look like any of the best keyways i have ever seen before. I looked into the kaba peaks stuff but i cant even get close to finding those keyways. You guys actually are really good :D i have only seen one other core like this but it was a 626 color with the new best logo and had kaba stamped above it. Which means that this keyways probably is a peaks Keyway now. So my best guess is the one i have was made before the peaks system but is indeed a peaks Keyway. But like you said it will be really hard to find a key blank for this bad boy, oh well i will just use it to practice picking on. Thanks for the tip on the check pin by the way.

I think we should have a game where you can post some weird looking keyways, and we can have the experts identify them :)

That sounds like the least exciting thing both to do and to watch I have ever heard of.
