Ok, im pretty new at this. I have been getting loads of information from the forums for a while now and cant wair for some lockpicks. The problem is Me being only in the 8th grade cant get 30 or 40 (american) bucks to buy some picks. And my parents arent gonna buy me lock picks... lol

I guess what i need here is some info on how i can get some quick and easy picks to start off with. Im mostly going to be working with pin locks. Any help will be great.

B.T.W. Even though im in 8th grade, im not going to take this picking into a bad direction. I am simply learning this for a hobby. :D

There are several different threads here on this subject. I'd recommend the search feature, since I've never used any of them myself.

That said, a set of lockpicks is generally closer to $10-$15, which shouldn't be too hard if you save up your nickles and dimes. I can assure you, it's a VERY good investment, since it is a lot easier with picks than it is with improvised tools.

Have you already decided which locks you're going to practice on? Hopefully none still connected to doors (and none belonging to neighbors!!) A lock you can disassemble is best. I can't imagine starting out without tools OR a lock you can take apart. I can assure you, the pyramid method can make the difference between success and frustration.

Recommendations: Read the guides posted on these forums I have found them invaluable. Use eye protection (I found that even if you dont get large peices flying into your eyes the metal dust irratates the eyes), Use a mask for breathing (woke up one morning after a bunch of pick making to find my nose full of metal and a sore throat), Keep the blade cool as possible while grinding, use a dremel for fine tuning if u have one, when finished making the pick use several different grits of sandpaper to polish the picks as much as possible.

I personally find this pick making as much fun as picking :)

Sound advuice there.

As a note, make sure when you dip the pick int water you make sure it is COMPLETELY cooled down before you continue grinding, if it's still warm it'll ruin the temper. :)

Thats interesting I never knew it had to be fully cooled altho I usually just drop it into the water and let it sit a couple seconds. More good info :D
