GUYS! its time for the step up from pick gun to manual picks (this is where hobby gets into it.. i feel i'll learn much more from manual picks, and they will be much more fun to use.
heres what im proposing to buy, any suggestions on changes? I'll look for the thread that explains what EACH pick does, but can someone pinpoint in case i can't find it?
thanks,

Something about SouthOrd, they pack a bunch of silly picks into one massively expensive package. If you're willing to part with 50 bucks, lockpicks.com sells Petersons for a resonable price, and they're really plesant to deal with. Plus, those all black, knureled rubber handeled picks are pretty sexy.
If you have to buy the Southords, get the cheaper set. You don't need the book, the site is much better.

I'm not sure if you'd want the book, and I agree, I think you should buy a beter quality set. It might cost around 40-50 dollars, but I think it would be worth it.

ya the book is probaly the same as the M.I.T and the handles are only really good for people who are good with pin picking or at least alrite at it. Cause I would never suggest a person leearning with handles cause it doesnt learn you about Feeling the binded pin , Set pin , False set pin. I only started using handles cuase i spend long time on some locks so i like to have a nice soft feeling on the handle.
Bad things about Southord vinyl handles there so hard to get on, I must of spent at least 10 mins getting them on with hot water.
Good things about Southord vinyl handles Once there on They are a great feeling and dont hurt at all, Yes you loose some feedback but its still possable to pick a lock.
The hurting of the riged edges of southord and the hard metal is well worth wearing vinyl handles

I just went to Southord and picked out 7 or so of the picks I wanted to try out instead of getting a kit. Came to around $15, shipped. That way I can get a good feel for which pick designs are most useful for me and then get high quality ones (or make them).
It doesn't come with a fancy kit, but you get to pick exactly what you want to try out for cheeeap.
I made tension wrenches from a wiper insert and half of a pair of tweezers for tougher locks.
cheers

That's how you do it. Honestly nobody needs a snowman pick.
lockpicks.com sells petersons, and does peterson-international.com, the governemtn set you say is really overpriced, you want the "just picks" set. they're pure gold.

You also need several more tension tools.
Especially different widths and thicknesses. It gets so bad that I pick up every street sweeper bristle I can...

in addition to what SF goon said...
I got a small and large diamond (he mentioned 1, not sure the size but i wanted to know how both feel) = $1.50 extra
An L rake ( http://southord.com/images/fullsize/SP-12.jpg) because I read it works very well for some people = +$1.50
A ball (because I suck at grinding circles and wanted to try the shape out)= +1.50.
So in addition to what was mentioned, the above set me back another $4.50. Not too big of a risk, considering.
As far as a case... I just used an empty nylon knife case i had sitting around. if you search on ebay for "nylon knife case" there are a ton... anything similar would work. Mine is a little under 5.5" long (folded) and 2.75" wide.
