Postby linty » 16 Mar 2006 19:20

i've got a friend who's got a safe which uses a tubar lock, the lock is removed now but we have no key for it, does anybody know if it can be impressioned or if i can somehow get a new key from chicago and if so, how?

thanks

TuBar or Tubular? TuBar is a high security lock made by chicago lock, which uses two parallel rows of four pins (8 pins in all). Each row of pins has it's own sidebar (that is, two sidebars in all) The pins have false notches, which are pretty deep, making the lock very hard to pick.

And since it's a high security lock, discussion of picking it or impressioning it is restricted to the Advanced Forums. ;-)

If the lock is removed, perhaps Chicago might make you a key, but more than likely, you will have to purchase a new lock and key(s). How, may I ask, did you get the safe open without a key?

Dialed the combination.

The only safe that I am familiar with that has a keyed lock made by Chicago and a dial is made by Sentry. Is this indeed a Sentry safe?

If so, are you sure its a TuBar and not a Tubular lock? Both are/were? produced by Chicago, but now the tubular design is made by many many different manufacturers.

I saw one device for opening Tubars which stated that by looking into the lock, you could determine the cuts needed on the key(or the settings for the tool).

Other than that, there is a patent for a pick which is similar to a tubular pick. I don't remember the patent#, but picture a tubular pick with the tubar shape.

Go to the sticky in advanced pick tools, and look for my post. The tubar decoder is somewhere in there.

sorry, i've been out for a bit.

it is a chicago tubar. i have no idea how it's open, i wasn't involved in that at all. i was just asked if i could come up with a key or a replacement lock. since the length seems a little off from most vending machine locks and i'd rather not modify the safe i thought maybe there was some way around this.

my attempt to apply for the advanced forums a month or so back was ignored so i'll have to wait a while before i can ask this question there.

A tubular lock, well thats a different animal entirely. Just take it to a locksmith and you should have a new key within minutes. The cheap ones are a real easy pick, and then its trivial to cut a key.

What type of cylinder is it? The vending type cylinders go for about $20 new. I have only seen the vending cylinder, never a mortise or kik. (I'm not sure if they even make them)

They do make mortice cylinders, occasionally on ebay. But the real question is what length of lock, and of course what kind of cam is on the back. But I would still suggest having a new key made. Easy to pick, gives you the code as well, just cut from code.

n2oah, assuming you were referring to the tubar locks, yes it's a vending machine type do you know how i could go about acquiring one?
