Bump lock keys

Postby XeroAid » 30 Mar 2006 16:11

im sorry for reading this wrong or whatever, i get the conecept behind bump-lock keys in how they have to be made and such. but is there such a thing as a key set of them, like is there a place i can just buy them instead of make it myself? i know this is lazy but is there such a way.

Yes, if you live in the UK, Souber will sell you a set IF, and only IF you are a locksmith.

Aside from that I think Omikron might have mentioned selling bump keys, but I forget...

Just go to your local keycutters and get a load cut - it's hardly going to give you a cardiac arrest ...

I understand the trouble XeroAcid may be having going to a lockie to get a bunch of '999' keys cut out. It will most definetely looks supicious and theres no real logical explanation, especially if hes an intelligent lockie.

Lockie: "What do you need all those keys cut the same for?"
Customer: "I'm not sure what keyway I have"
Lockie: "Bring it in here"
Customer: "I'd rather just try it at home, I can't bring it"
etc

Its just hard to explain a fascination with bumpkeys to a lockie, he may understand the hobby side of picking if you explained it, but bumpkeys are quite frankly a bypass method and he will only jump to conclusions.

Sorry if this incorrect or offens anyone.

Cheers,

I heard of a way that worked for me and I know its wrong to lie. I get a bad feeling in the pit of my stomach when I do that though. I went to my lockie with a note that said "front and back door-99999." He made it but I think he had an idea of what it was because he filed down the tips a bit. :(

Go into a locksmiths and request a key for your <insert lock here>. The key blank is a Silca so-and-so, and the cuts are 9 8 9 7 9. File the two offset middle cuts down to the same level as the 9 cuts and even the hills out. A decent file will be needed.

Repeat this until you have as many bumpkeys as you need. Also, once you have a particular key blank bump key, you can simply pop down to your local shoe/repair/key cutting/watch batteries hut and get it copied. Keep a collection of different key blanks and then you can get them copied again if they get lost or snapped.

This, of course, is if you don't have an code cutting machine. 8)

I was curious to if these bump keys worked, so i got a KW1 cut. I didnt have to go to a lockie, just got to lowes or home depot, the only reaction i got when i gave the girl the paper witht he code was.. thank god this ones easy, they dont care what the code is or how many you want there getting there hourly pay. So if you want a nice bump key just go to lows. I shouldn't bust on lowes workers because i am one in the lock hardware section, i havent had anyone ask me for one yet but i am waiting.. by the way this was about a year before i worked there lol

They allmost all look that way and say that.
They can, but won't.
There are several ways of obtaining them.

Go to ebay and bid on a set of space and depth keys. The deepest cut key in the set will be your new bumpkey. Be sure you make copies of that key before bumping with it or modifying it.

Are there ever keys cut that deep in locks? It seems pretty obvious (to me anyways) that this is going to be made into a bumpkey

No, this had nothing to do with anything. For one, filing the tips down won't adversly affect your bumpkey, and second, it's better for your lock so he thought he was doing you a favor. Really, locksmiths see the stupidest pin arrangements. I'm surprised he didn't ask if he could rekey your lock.

Unless they are Kwikset space/depth keys, which suck as bumpkeys because they have flat valleys and tiny tiny bumps.
