Southord is a good brand and i dont think they damage easily. I have a set and i think they are strong and reliable.
You definantly need more practice if your damaging your tension tool inside the lock. The tension required on most locks is so minimal it can be very easy to over apply tension and bend your picks, so my suggestion is taking your time with the lock so you can get a feel for it. There is a finess to picking... Some people "Get it" after reading the guides and are able topick their first lock with improvised tools, others dont "get it" and take more time to figure out what they are doing wrong.
