i have a key, it says exactly
"RESTRICTED
DO NOT COPY
REG DES (AUS)"
and i want to copy it. i can assure you my intentions are perfectly legal and am not breaking any law.
questions:
1.What does the REG DES mean, (the aus means australia, thats where i am)
2.How would i go about getting it copied?

As long as it's not a restricted keyway (medeco, assa/abloy, multlock, schlage primus, etc.) just take it to the hardware store, they don't care what's stamped on it . A lot of keys have that 'do not copy' thing stamped on them, and it really doesn't mean anything anymore; the only way to prevent duplication is to use a legally patented and restricted keyway.

Oh, and if you can tell us what's stamped on the key (we're looking for a brand name and keyway here) or take a picture of both sides of it that would make things a lot easier.

put a piece of tape over the dnc and write 'back door' on it, then dirty the tape and make the edges look old worn. then go to a copier who is very young Ask them if they have the blank, this takes control of the situation right away, they are looking for the blank before you even ask for a copy. if they pull tape off or otherwise refuse, try to get a blank

Some of the others may know better, but you may want to check your local laws in regards to getting copies. If you are the original owner of the lock/keys in question, the locksmith you purchased them from should be able to cut you as many copies as necessary.
Institutions such as schools, places like apartment buildings and some commercial places have the keys stamped in that manner in an effort to have some key control, and they want you to take the key back to them to request further copies.
Occasionally the not-as-honest locksmith (generally in areas where one can be fined for cutting keys stamped in that manner) will stamp keys thusly without asking to force the buyer to come back to them for any further copies.

Any half-decent locksmith supply company will have them. However, I would strongly reccommend agaisnt it as it is both unethical and deceptive. Many customers think that just because a key has DND stamped on it, that no one will be able to copy their key. This is of course not the case and they should be aware of that gap in their security.

That is correct. It is an unethical practice unless requested by the customer, and definitely NOT a smart idea.

I worked in a retail shop for several years and saw many keys with back door or moms house on them. My employer thought that we did not have the right to lift tape and check for dnd stamping. Keys that are restricted, of course, do not need the stamps.

You can get it cut, but i'm not sure whether he/she will or not (as it is obviously from a masterkey system they may think your up to no good)
You would be best to go to a locksmith that deals lockwood (Alot)
That key/blank (PQ) is still in patent.

what's it for? Your work? If so, ask them to get a copy cut. Most likely, the locksmith involved is gonna have to go to the boss or manager or owner to get authorization to cut the key anyway.
