Ok, i can pick the deadbolt that I have but cannot do this one. I have no idea why. Any suggestions on techniques. I just got my first pickset in the mail yesterday. Sorry again for the quality of the images but all I have is my camera phone. Actually do you know an easy way to take this apart? That may be easiest, just to see inside. There is a little hole on the side which i think may release something, but its blocked. I also dont have the key to it anymore. Anyway, any suggestions would be welcome.

Mr. Happy be happy :D Its should be no biggie, as a i share in your frustration with doorknob locks. Its a little hard to judge as the dead bolt is stationary so any cyinder movement is felt in a door knob you dont one if it was the cylinder or the dumb knob. But any way do you have a key? if you do then take a look at the key, some call it cheating but for learning sake its a good little helper if you dont have the key then take it apart as far as how to do so i have an old kwickset knob down stairs i will see if i cant get it apart and i will follow up unless somone beats me to it.

I think that lock is just so cheap and the cylinder is so sloppy. I have a doorknob key lock looks almost just like that and it called a "Faultless" it does not even work that well with a key and it is hard to pick.

Thanks LockNewbie21, that would be appriciated...and for the sympatny :P. I have tried raking, pushing, tapping... nothing. I dont have the key anymore which is why I can futz around with it. Looking down the center of it it looks like it is a wafer lock, although i could be mistaken.

I can't even bump it. I find it kind of funny that the cheapest locks that I have are actually the most secure.

Vary the tension, cheap locks can be decieving because of poor quality and poor materials used. I find that very light tension sometimes is the answer on cheap cylinders

cheep donkey lock

Postby keysman » 23 Apr 2006 0:51

A good dose of WD40 and light tension should do the trick.
The hole on the side of the knob will line up with the retainer when the lock is unlocked, (key/cylinder may have to be turned )use a straightened out paper clip or a poke tool of some kind to push the retainer in, pull the knob from the lock.

You may get lucky ,if the lock can be unlocked ( i.e. passage mode) you may be able to turn the knob so the hole lines up with the retainer . It is possible that the key is not required to remove the knob.
I have this on some of the REALLY cheep import locks.
