Shim?

Postby Rubberducky » 26 Apr 2006 14:09

I saw an instructional video of how to use a padlock shim.
Does every lock have enough space to be 'shimmed', and if so why use a pick for padlocks?

No, not every padlock has enough space to be shimmed. Also some padlocks are shim proof by using double ball locking mechanisms and special bolts in other cases.

I can only speak for myself, but padlocks make good cheap practice locks that you can easily hold in your hands and work with, and some of the higher end padlocks are actually very tough to pick and in any case are excellent for learning and practice.

Pinsetter said it. The only lock i have ever seen shimmed is a Master lock combo. But the double ball elimnates that all together. I wouldnt waste money on shims, they may help what guys? like 2% of the time? but all the new locks are shim proof. Plus the isnt really a reason for a newbie to want to shim.. i mean you can try but theres no skill or fun in it. Trust me Learning Picking its much more challenging and also rewarding when you here the POP! and the locks open.

If you want to try shimming but not spending any money on them, there's always viewtopic.php?t=10991.

I have heard of measuring tape being used as it is fairly strong, but before I go out and buy on to tear apart I would like to know if anyone has ever used measuring tape before?

It sounds like a standard issue school locker lock. Try looking up the combination in the big black book that lists combinations by serial number. Your facilities or physical plant department will almost certainly have one, just ask.

it is a school lock, however i am borrowing it WITH permission and they know im trying to open it. it is not in the schools books, the only lockers in my broke-up school that are recorded combos are the upright lockers and they have built in locks (not that a nice kick wouldnt open one)

ps- in case anyone is wondering (shrub in particuliar) im no thief, i am interested in this artform, if i was trying to open it for theft, etc i would just like break it somehow.

and again if anyone can tell me how to post pics i will gladly put up an image(s).[/img]

i think the problem lies within the locking mechanism. on the one i shimmed the other day (please excuse my lack of proper terminology) the locking part went into the shackle straight across, on this lock (i saw it open when my teacher took it off (he used key, doesnt even know combo) i saw inside briefly, it locks kinda in front of it on the side, but in the same fashion as before, just differently placed. i couldnt shim it and am too new to pick it. unless there is an easy way.

thanks again all.

I made my own out of the top of a frutopia bottle. The metal is much more rigid and the lip of the cap is already there for you to press down on.

photobucket.com is what most people use to post pics. I dont because I have a site i just upload them to and it is faster for me.

I used a pair fo needle nose pliers to bend the cap and used a pencil as a guide. I dont know about everything but it works on the Masterlock combination lock I have. I dont have a huge selection of stuff since I have just started.
