im trying to set the first pin on a padlock of 5 pins. once i get the first pin down ill know its possible to do the rest, its just that i dont know if im picking the padlock correctly. oh and im using paperclips until my southord 9 set arrives :D

i just wanna know that im doing it the right way-

first i put the tension wrench in and push it the way the key turns it, then i try and set the first pin in place, by pressing down on it slowly

all i want to do is set the first pin sucsesfully. do i have to try and set the pin slower or something? thanks

the "first" pin may not be the one that's binding most. You want to probe all the pins and find the order in which they bind. (The pins bind differently because of non-precise tolerances and drilling during manufacturing.) Find the one that is the hardest to press while applying tension, and be sure you're using only enough pressure to bind the pin but still be able to move it fairly easily. When you find the correct pin to begin picking, press it slowly till you feel it "set". It'll be a small vibration on the pick and will be accompanied by a very faint (most of the time) click.

ah right.. i think i get it now.

i did the 'rake' trick, well i think thats what its called, and as i stopped using the tension wrench i could hear the pins un-set. i think i got about 2 or 3 to set by raking. ill have a go at setting the remaining pins one by one. thanks for the advice :D
