incredibly secure, but there exists one weakness... a geographical one.

I'm confused... what does this mean?

The sidebars are all the same in any given region - it means that with one bump key you could open every lock by bumping in one of the regional "zones" since they all use the same sidebar cut.

The sidebars come pre-cut when the locksmiths get them, so all that is needed is to add the depth cuts.

Idealy they would be sold with random sidebars, but could you imagine the poor lockie who has to cut them? he'd need a <trying hard not to swear> load of blanks.

I seen that video of Deviant talking about and explaining the ASSA twin.
Are those locks UK only? I've never seen one here in the states.

Is there no way to defeat the sidebar other than the special key blank? I was thinking of a pick with a pigtail, almost like a miniature corkscrew on the end that you could rotate to lift the sidebar pins. Since it is a sidebar, do you get any feedback letting you know if they're set?

I don't know those locks at all, but a pick designed to rotate to provide lift looked like it could be possible from the video.

He's got three up at the same time, which means they'll all go for less than they would if he just had one up (he's basically splitting all the potential bidders between three locks instead of letting them fight each other over just one and drive up the price), so get'em while they're hot. I'd snatch one up, but for who knows what reason, the twin cylinder used in them doesn't include the sidebar.

I read somewhere that ASSA will make you a custom sidebar for a sufficiently large instalation. Or probably if you just pay them enough :-)
You can turn the sidebar end-for-end to get a new code, bu then the problem is getting keys for it.
There are only five sidebar pins and they seem to have five potential depths, so that 5^5 potential sidebar bitings, and I'd leave out the five that are all at the same cut.

Anyone interested in those locks should keep in mind that (A) they are zero bitted (B) they come with no keys and no sidebar. This means you will have to take the lock to an assa dealer and have them install a sidebar in the lock and supply you with keys which will get expensive quick. You are better off finding another auction in my opinion.

As far as ASSA Twin in the US they are out there. I have several and I also have about 40-60 cut keys from a master system that was replaced and the keys given to me by the property owner. I still have alot of the keys left but very few of the sidebar parts from the salvageable locks.
For the best book out there on high security locks and their operation, take a look at amazon.com for High-Security Mechanical Locks An Encyclopedic Reference. Written by our very own site member Greyman! A true 5 Star read!!
