Wrong blank key. Solution?

Postby Treb » 2 May 2006 3:46

Hi there. I have a key I want to copy but I don’t have a blank that matches it.
If I take a blank key that is the same length and size but is not the same pattern, and cut the middle out then cut it. With the bottom acting as a torch wrench effectively it should work, yeah?

I've filed the wards away on a wrong blank (Schlage F) to fit another keyway (Schlage G). It works, but not very well.

That is a waste of time. Why not spend the $1 or $2 and go to the hardware store and buy the right blank?

Nah, im not copying restricted keys. We live in the country and i don’t have much access to hardware stores. We needed another key for the back shed. Happened to have a blank laying about, and thought I could put it to use.
Unless you guys know a website that you can mail order or look up key section or something, im kinda doomed.

Well a key cut like you suggest isnt going to last long, if you have some keys you would be better fileing the wards down on the side until it fits instead of just cutting the full part out.

Tell us the blank you need and maybe someone on here will send you one

Even if someone could point you to a key blank catalog you might have a hard time picking the correct blank.

What kind of lock is it?

Does the key have any numbers, letters or names on it?

Sorry, I wasn't clear -- THIS is what I've successfully done, not removed the entire center of the key. It'll only work if you use a blank with the same basic shape as the keyway, one that only needs to be thinned a bit here or there.

If its a shed is it a padlock? if so you may as well just get another lock for the price they are, same goes for a cylinder come to think about it, they will be even cheaper.
Either way if your miles away from your local store chances are it came from there in th first place and they may be able to help you better next time your out that way.

Its a "Lockwood" lock, but not a pad lock. If that helps? its kinda set into the door.

Does "KB2015P", make any sence?

Good point Shrub, i might just have to wait a while.
Thanks for the links jimb.

This forum is so helpfull, i'd really like to thank the lot of you. :)

instead of cutting the key like that and having a chance of it breaking in the lock, ide say just go buy a key.
