I've noticed the distributor sale of other lock pick tools to the public, yet not bump keys. I have also noticed other distributors who will sell bump keys to the public. Are these various state laws or is there federal legislation pending I am not aware of. I own a number of bump keys that I deem for legitimate purpose. I own most if not all the locks for these keys, and I wish to stay on the right side of the law.
Thanks for any help in better understanding this.
Regards

To me there should be no law as to possesecion of any kind of lock manipulation instrument as pretty much any one owns a gun, its the reponcibility of the bearer. The police and everyone else knows that a law means nothing unless people follow it. Its your responcibilty to use them responcibilty, and to those who chose a darker path then they will learn justice till then there will always be pending laws and such especially on certian subjects regarding public sercurity and privacy, as with all laws some say they were meant to be broken, this was said since the inception of the first laws, there will be followers and breakers its yours as anyone else's deciscion what you are, and what would make you happier, to be able to assist someone who is reling on you in a time of need, and get them into the house car or anything else or give them a lock that makes them feel secure and take pride in that feeling and responcibilty, or do somthing stupid gain little or nothin live with guilt and no self respect until it catches up to you as it always does.
Lol sorry for the long post, but ehh i guess you learn from all those long lectures in law and priciples of society class. Not to mention history itself
I think if you own them and there for good purpose and you plan to help someone or use it for good then you deserve to own what ever it takes, i wouldnt worry buddy you seem like a good guy, good luck man

Lol... it would seem Derrick is now supplied by Souber... judging by the influx of all Souber tools onto his site.

In the US, there IS now pressure to legislate the regulation of bumpkeys. I spoke with Barrett of lockpicks.com, official distributor of Omni's KEBump, and they recently pulled their sales of KW1 and SC1 bumpkeys. They presently offer M1 bumpkeys, but these too may be yanked in the future. Lockpicks.com doesn't want to become the center of attention in this new legislation-- no reputable dealer does.
I'm sure a few flashoholics here can appreciate the potential drama that will ensue, as it did for high-power laser pointers a couple years back.

By high power you mean lighting matches or just showing the beam on a humid night
For the best book out there on high security locks and their operation, take a look at amazon.com for High-Security Mechanical Locks An Encyclopedic Reference. Written by our very own site member Greyman! A true 5 Star read!!

Both. The crack-down affected buyers/sellers of 5-150mW "finger of god" lasers that can be seen WITHOUT fog, and 150-350mW "fire starters". There are few people still selling in the US, and they are not easy to find. Wicked Lasers fled to China to avoid arrest, and now he's shipping lasers stuffed in teddy bears to get them past customs. It's crazy.
I hope it never gets to the point where keyblanks are restricted and/or heavily taxed.

I see no problem in selling them. I mean personally i just started messing with bumps key, trying to make on with some old keys i no longer use with files i have yet to be successful. I though of something sort of intersting. Okay so to make a perfect bump key you need a machine right? well wouldnt a lockie who these are intended for jsut be able to make his own right in his shop, there for no need in purshasing them? I am a hobby picker so i get a little bit more thrill and satisfaction trying to make a good one myslef and see if it works, thats just my hobby picker point of view. But if they do sell them, make it a law not to outlaw selling them, just when purchasing them you have to prove your a "bonifide Locksmith" as they call it to purchase i mean it sounds fair right?

I understand what you are saying, and agree with your ideas, on the most part.
My concerns are with pending legislation, that at this point I understand is incomplete. Could this new law include such words as sale of, purchase of, creation of, or possesses a bump key? Could it in this post 9/11 U.S.A. include restrictions on other lock tools.
Our hobby is very often not understood, and treated as suspect, you have to admit we don't have a strong voice in washington.
It has caught my attention, and I'm interested in seeing how it plays out.

I'm with ya buzzy, it would be an outrage to me if they banned lockpicks and such for reasons unrelating to actual crime with use of picks, from what my understanding in here is far and few between. Its quite a tough call, i think that demo's done by news and such really spike the intrest of bump keys in particular, just makes me wonder if the press would not have gotten invovled, i would take a guess that bump keys would be jsut another key out there. I wouldnt let it worry you though i mean if it does come to bumps absoluty illegal i would still have them, i mean we dont carry them around, its really just the press doing what it always does over inflaite things. For conversation sake, My father owns an RV, the kind you pull with your truck, any way the number of the key in the news report um.. 375 key? they called it, anyway this key opened every trailors storage compartment, my uncle camps with us i tried it and it was true, so there was outraged people all over our campground. But i thought in reality its just the press inflating it as our storage compartments as any other trailor is simply a wafer lock, how ever i doo see you point and agree with you buzzy, just have to keep our eyes open for the news and press reports, if theres enough some uppty congressman who knows nothing of there actual usefulness to a locksmtih will pass a ban or sumthin rediculous.
