Key Cutting Machine

Postby Woofcat » 12 May 2006 18:42

Hey. I was wondering what an older used key cutting machine goes for. This one is for Automotive keys. I don't know if there is any diffrence or what it is like or model. It is in use now but the business is phaseing it out. Car Quest is the company. I got it offered to me for $200. Is this a good deal or a bad one? I'll post with photos if its worth it IMO. I'll check it out Monday or Tuesday. Thanks for any advice. I also assume there are some key blanks and assorted crap with it.

More info is needed here. Is it a duplicator or a code machine. Manual code machine or duplicator, automatic duplicator, electronic code machine? What brand and how old approximately? Is the cutter, belts, and jaws in good shape?

Alot of variables to go on here. I just put $200 into an ITL9000 code machine and it cannot be fixed as it is outdated compared to the new models and parts are no longer available so keep this in mind when buying something without knowing the exact age.
For the best book out there on high security locks and their operation, take a look at amazon.com for High-Security Mechanical Locks An Encyclopedic Reference. Written by our very own site member Greyman! A true 5 Star read!!

If it is a duplicator the first thing to check is the spacing between the jaws, if the distance is too short you will not be able to cut many of the new longer auto keyblanks. A space of 2" is standard on many older machines, it works well for commercial keys but will not on many new auto keys. If you are planning on doing auto work consider this point. My latest new keymachine has a space of 3 1/2' between the jaws.
I have purchased several used key machines from $17.00 to $165.00, this one came with 1300 keyblanks.
If the keymachine seems solid with no play in the carrige or cutter I would suggest offering $125.00 max less if it is sloppy, see what happens. The last machine I purchased is AC/DC rechargeable with built in light NEW $500.00. Use this info to get a deal
