Tension wrench broke in deadbolt house lock.

Postby alyks » 23 May 2006 17:02

I was finished making a tension wrench, so I wanted to test it. I ran to the house and stuck it in the lock and it broke. The metal is in the back of the lock and I don't know how to get it out, any suggestions?

A small hook or an extractor will do the job, if not try a bend paperclip.

BTW, you shouldn't pick a lock witch is in use, at least not if you're not experienced in lockpicking.
If a tensionwrench breaks, you're obviously useing too much force on it.

If you are unsuccessful with the key extractor (or some other such device), this may be a fine opportunity to learn how to disassemble a lock.

While taking the lock apart to extract the broken piece, please repeat the following lock picking mantra:
"I will not pick locks I rely on. I will not pick locks I rely on. I will not pick locks I rely on."

If you haven’t jammed the end of the wrench back into the lock you could try using a magnet to pull it out?
This is just a guess but I’d say that you didn’t heat the wrench up enough before bending it, this caused the metal to fatigue and brake more easily.
If you can heat the metal up until it glows then bend it. :D

Careful there. The temper of the steel has as much to do with the speed of cooling as it does with the heat you achieve. There are several good threads on this site that explain heat treating in great detail. Have a read through them for more clarification.
